Polar Vortex! What they aren’t telling you on the Weather Channel

Next week, when that smartass in your office makes the obligatory “Where’s global warming,” comment about the bone chilling cold settling over the country, you can hammer him with an answer. For almost a week now the weather channel has been attempting to panic people about a monster storm in the Pacific Northwest that will victimize 60 million Americans with a soul freezing polar vortex, But that is only part of the story, and for that smartass in your office the storm can be attributed in part to global warming.

The simple version is this; the Pacific currents act as something of a race track, coming off the warm equatorial waters off of South America and running around the Pacific rim to Alaska, where it splits and drives down the coast or across North America. Weather is global, so it is affected globally, but there are regional drivers and regional patterns.

For 5 years I ran a portion of United Airlines’ cargo logistics for the Pacific. In that capacity I was also intimately aware of the operations of Quantas, Malaysian Air, Lufthansa, JAL and a number of other Pacific carriers. My nightmare day in and day out was maintaining supply in several critical stations in which winds, weather and weight were a constant challenge. I was good at reading the weather patterns in order to achieve success and maintain supply and equipment for United’s $600 million regional operation. I know Pacific weather.

So here is what you tell the smartass at the water cooler on Thursday; A Columbia University study found that the Pacific had “warmed 15 times faster in the last 60 years than they did during apparent natural warming cycles in the previous 10,000″. The warmest region of water in the Pacific a two weeks ago spawned the latest in a series of mega storms. The last storm, Nuri grew to a category 5 super storm with sustained winds of 165mph, with gusts to 180mph. Recall the super storm Haiyan that devastated the Philippines in 2013. Both storms are among the strongest ever recorded in human history.

Well, Nuri never went away. Instead it spun north up the Pacific rim where its massive low pressure system will slide down the Northwest seaboard. As it does it will force frigid air over northern Canada.

So listen for the idiots, who will scoff this week at global warming and manmade climate change, but here it is, about to kick us all in the ass, which is what you should do to the smart ass at the water cooler. It will help you feel a bit warmer.

Alert Status Delta Red, Threat Con Super Max!!!!!

The weather channel announced today that Chicago is at TorCon One warning status. That is, Chicago has a one in ten chance of having a tornado today. Good god, where will I hide? Have I collected enough emergency disaster meals, stockpiled enough ammunition, and locked and loaded all of my guns. If the Zombies come and attempt to lay a finger on even one of my coveted survival stash of Snickers bars, I swear I’ll, I’ll…

Be honest, how many of you after hearing the news this weekend that the health worker on the cruise ship this weekend had been cleared of Ebola and was allowed to go home breathed a sigh of relief. Not that she didn’t have Ebola, but that the hysterical media-driven stupidity might at last have crested. Limbaugh started his program whipping up hysteria. The morning show on another rightwing station invited an expert in infectious diseases, and then shifted the cogent and even-tempered answers from the expert into a graphic description of how Ebola kills its victims. They ignored the fact that all two current victims but the first victim, Mr. Duncan, who did not receive proper treatment, have survived the disease. The “logic-anchored” right is replete with panic, alarm and hysteria.

Pick an issue. ISIS terrorists are streaming across the Mexican border, left wide open by Obama, to behead Americans carte blanche and wholesale across the fifty states. Hillary Clinton could care less that the ambassador to Libya was butchered over hours and hours while Obama was asleep or golfing. Hispanic children are bringing pandemics across the border, according to Michael Savage, and Ferguson’s unrest means the welfare coloreds are coming to loot your particular gated suburban community. Obama is dividing America by simply talking about race? Huh? Obama, we are told, and which former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh so painfully conceded on his Far Side-type of radio program, is a Muslim, who wants to destroy America. Fear, panic, panic, fear!

We are fed a constant diet of fear and panic in this country, through the media, talk radio and by advertisers. It is the sales tactic of last resort, and they are playing it to the hilt. Specifically they target the elderly and the white middle class, and they respond instinctively. There is a deeply ingrained inclination to pay attention to the alarmist. Likely it helped your neighbor known when a lion was stalking the tribe in the Savannahs of central Africa. But this all began when corporations began gobbling up media in this country until 90% or more, including Facebook is poured through multiple filters.

We are told that crime is rampant in Chicago, with murder and mayhem everywhere. It’s out of control! Joe Walsh was pounding the desk with pretend hysterics over this crisis filler. That is, they need to constantly fill the airwaves with the idea, ahead of an election, that the world is crumbling. Truth is, the murder rate-one is too many- will be lower this year than last year. 357 currently, or about 300 less than the peak under Bush, and to be fair, half of what it was in 1994 under Clinton. Last year it was 415. It was 513 under Bush’s final year in office, but alas, no hysteria..

Limbaugh cited a rightwing poll and was screaming into the microphone about 85% of the American people saying that the country is “going to hell!” The right will cite chapter and verse from so-called experts who for self-aggrandizement, or to kiss the ass of the likes of a Hannity or savage for their 3 minutes on TV or radio to feed their fear narrative, but it is all to keep you controlled and diverted from real truths. Ebola killed one guy in this country who was half dead when the for-profit hospital in Texas followed their corporate guidelines and sent him home. That same media ignores many thousands of true, not-hysterical climate scientists warning of climate change; which has already killed thousands(I’ll send you the list) and has already mired us in wars for oil and water.

Occupy missed their true calling. Instead of occupying parks, they should have occupied the media. Imagine the country we might have had they stormed CBS and FOX, Salem, Clear Channel and the rest and returned the media to the people. You rightwingers out there longing for the good old days, how come that that doesn’t apply to a public media that represents and reflects the people, not the wealthy and powerful? How come that doesn’t mean a media that doesn’t strive to keep us distracted with crisis after crisis, day after day?

The Nature Trigger, Global Climate Change and Fate

A series of stories are leading to a disturbing conclusion that nature may not be an ally, but an all too willing partner in the coming Global Climate Catastrophe, at least as far as human civilization is concerned. More and more evidence is coming to light that as human accelerated Global Warming, Or Anthropogenic Global Warming, AGW, environmental thresholds are reached. Each of these thresholds marks a tripwire in which the environment itself becomes the driver in AGW. Rather like a campfire which grows to become a firestorm, out of control, wholly independent and feeding itself from multiple sources, in which the terrain, atmosphere and forest (or homes) all become partners in the process.

Recent articles in earthtimes.org and Nature discussed the accelerated expulsion of carbon from the soil as Global temperatures increase. 2014 was the hottest year in recorded history. It is evidence that those thresholds or triggers are being reached. In the Nature article, Temperature sensitivity of soil respiration rates enhanced by microbial community response, taken from a number of studies discusses findings that “warming induced stimulation of soil microbial respiration rates could increase soil carbon dioxide emissions and hence induce a positive climate feedback effect…” and that, “…substantial carbon stores in Arctic and boreal soils could be more vulnerable to climate warming than currently predicted.” In other words the environment maintains stores of carbon which would otherwise be loosed to the atmosphere, making it warmer and less hospitable to life.

Satellite imagery recorded a record low in Arctic Sea ice in 2012. This year, due to continuing record low levels of sea ice more than 35,000 walrus came ashore in Alaska. The phenomenon was first reported in 2007, but the numbers this year are unprecedented. Alaska in 2014 recorded an unusually warm winter. Additional evidence also has emerged from previously unrealized effects of global climate change in Greenland which shows it is more vulnerable than previously believed. It is estimated that melting of Greenland glaciers releases 200gigatons of fresh water into the oceans annually. Antarctic is melting at a vastly accelerated rate as well, and though sea ice covers a wider area around Antarctic this year, it is feared that warming of the continent has spread ice over the wider area. There is also concern that it is the result of fresh water melting from glaciers. Fresh water freezes much easier than salt water. Fresh water and Sea water do not mix, but instead form layers and disrupts currents which in turn drives and affects weather. Rising sea levels will also impact aquifers, contaminating ground water essential for human consumption, crops and livestock. One can imagine the ramifications to society, the economy and instability worldwide.

Rush Limbaugh yesterday was cheering the absence of hurricanes striking Florida in the last 9 years, ignoring, of course, hurricane Sandy and other powerful storms striking Mexico or affecting the Atlantic. Lost to Limbaugh, and others how think narrowly in terms of the weather exactly where they are standing, is an alarming warming of the Atlantic ocean, and the historic super storms in the Pacific, like Hayan and VongFong, the two most powerful storms ever recorded on earth. Cancun was devastated by hurricane Wilma in 2005. This year hurricane Odile, the most intense cyclone to hit the region on in more than 4 decades, pummeled Cabo san Lucas.

Humanity has its own tripwires. We, as a species, are beyond the point of addressing Global Climate Change and now must look to adaptation. If we fail to heed that warning, the next may be survival, a partnership and community enterprise mankind shows itself daily to be incapable of doing rationally. The point here is not to create panic or hopelessness, but engender a deeper understanding of the supreme balance that allows for life to exist on this planet, and which allows for human life to exist. The evidence is clear, that with each passing day the planet reaches and crosses thresholds. With each line, each trigger we lose the chance to chart our own fate and instead enter into the disastrous realm of the unknown in which calamity and the chaos of global climate change decides our fate instead.
