VETTING A REFUGEE LIE

boatpeople1Republicans, like Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson and Rebublican Governors want to haIt settlement of Syrian refugees in the wake of the Paris attacks. They claim a necessity to fully vet each individual. They are lying. It is the excuse of bigots and bureaucrats. Republicans, the Right and weak-kneed Democrats on the Left merely throw around the idea of vetting Syrian Refugees, but it is a ruse to excuse their personal bias, inaction and lack of conscience.

There is no vetting process for Refugees. There is no process to “vet” a refugee as if they were accepting a position in the NSA, or even applying for a job at Taco Bell. Rarely do refugees have valid identification. That is the definition of Refugee. These are people fleeing burning villages, imminent death most often in a panic. The likelihood they will have carefully packed and carried three forms of ID, school and government records, an itinerary and a list of references is unlikely. Usually those references are either trying to kill them or drive them from their homes, are dead or also a refugee.

Why wasn’t the same panic applied to the estimated 2 million Vietnamese boat people who fled their war torn country in flimsy and overcrowded boats and ships. There were no cries to leave them floundering at sea just in case there was, out of 2 million, a couple of Viet Cong infiltrators. Or Cuban refugees from the Castro regime, who were welcomed in part as a slight because of the political impasse between the US and Cuban governments. Some of those actually went on to commit acts of terrorism against Cuban civilians with the support of the US government, such as Cubana Airlines Flight 455. In the United States some 11 million Undocumented Immigrants are not filtered through some fraudulent “vetting” process, hence the “Undocumented” part. The same was true from German and European refugees after the Second World War, including orphans and Holocaust victims. boat bosnia199507-refugees_1508531i

This wholly new effort to stop Syrian Refugees from being settled in the US, or even receiving nominally humane shelter and treatment as Winter encroaches is rooted in anti-Muslim fear and bigotry. Crime in Muslim communities is far lower than in many other communities. No community is without crime. There are no official statistics, nor should there be, on crime broken down by religion. It should be noted strongly, however, that Muslims are the only group singled out in news stories by their religion. That is, the media specifically mentions religion, unlike headlines describing Catholics, Jews, Hindus or even Atheists. A headline reading “Jew robs bank,” or “”Christian guns down 3 in shooting spree” would cause immediate outrage.

The Paris Judgment

Paris was a turning point on Friday. Certainly this will affect the economic debate in the US presidential election. As I wrote back in May and June, election predictions too far out are dangerous, as they can turn on a dime. The West and the US will edge a bit closer to fascism paraded as security. Europe’s ultra-right wing will be invigorated, and while the West, particularly NATO and the US will appear to take a more aggressive stance against ISIS and its affiliates, like yesterday’s airstrike by US warplanes in Libya, that is merely a matter of competition now between the US and Russia over oil and gas in the Mideast. The US is simply attempting to keep pace and compete with Russia.

Following the French terrorist incident Friday in which at least 129 were killed France found resolve with Russia, paving a new boost in prestige for Russia. Russia, smarting from an attack on an airliner two weeks ago in Egypt is benefitting from a resurgence of nationalism. It is likely, even predictable that a new more powerful rightwing, anti-immigrant and aggressively violent, will grow to prominence across Europe and Russia. This comes at a time when Europe is struggling to cope with hundreds of thousands of predominantly Syrian refugees. The timing of these attacks is hardly coincidental.

The attacks in Paris by ISIS is a rebuke of a renewed assault, now including Russia, but they are also a calculated political move. Europe is already polarizing in the wake of the attacks. That means two forces are attempting to radicalize immigrants and Muslims in Europe as a resurgent rightwing drives division through hate and opportunism. The refugees lay squarely in the middle of that equation. The attacks will also slow or stop progress in addressing the refugee crisis just as winter begins. That will mean a rise in desperation that will drive more violence potentially.

In this country whatever initiative Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton may have had will evaporate quickly as fears rise, valid or not, of possible terror attacks within the US going into the holiday season. The narrative will be on security and guns, not economy. The attacks immediately undercut the so-called million student march on pressing economic issues here. Rightwing commentators have already begun describing the #BlackLivesMatter effort as terrorism. This weekend would be dictator Donald Trump capitalized ghoulishly by criticizing the French for gun control laws. He is just the first of what will be a gleeful orgy on the right concerning guns. they will point to France as an example against any sort of reasonable gun legislation.

In fact, French citizens are allowed to own guns. In this country there has been a call for screenings based upon mental illness. French law requires competency exams by a doctor annually, along with a regular check up. The weapons used in this weeks attacks are smuggled into the country illegally. French gangs receive many combat style weapons from the former Yugoslavia where in the aftermath of war unregistered guns still proliferate. It is the same issue facing Chicago’s violence with straw purchases from gun stores ringing the south and west borders of Chicago. One of Friday’s gunmen, Omar Ismail Mostefai, born in France, was a petty criminal with access to illegal weapons before becoming radicalized. The suddenness of attacks and the nature of those attacks would have neutralized any would-be pistol packing party-goer in a dark crowded, loud and confused environment. Furthermore, the attackers were already resolved to die.

The truth is, gun laws in France work. There were just 665 murders in 2012 in France, with a per capita rate of 1 compared with 15,000 and a per capita rate of 5 for the US. The United States has FAA rules and licensing for aircraft, but that did not prevent 9-11, so by the gun lobby’s logic we should close the FAA. To drive a car Americans must have a valid license, which doesn’t stop car thieves.

ISIS is calculating and the West is still reacting blindly. More security undermines democracy and civil liberties. They are shrewdly sowing discord in target countries. Attacks and threats of violence driven by FOX and the right in this country from these attacks will increase pressure on American Muslim and immigrant communities, exactly what ISIS hopes to achieve. They want unrest and division in Europe by enlivening radical rightwing groups and politicians and by polarizing normally reasonable communities. In the US, the Paris attacks fit perfectly to the Republican effort to polarize whites by sowing fear from immigrants and Muslims, since they have all but lost Hispanic, and Black voters.

It remains to be seen how this will turn out. Given the level of narrative and its tolerance by the American people, that does not bode well for civil liberties, the election, civility and democracy in America, in Europe and beyond. Put this one in the win column for ISIS. This was an attack on social and community fault lines, which just became wider and more dangerous. Just like Osama bin Laden and September 11, 2001, the attack was on the crumbling vestiges of democracy and civil society.

What we bought today

…uniquely American extremism is a toxic mix of selective doctrine, latent violence, racial melancholia and rabid consumer excess…

The sun glinted off the wing of the United 737 parked at Gate C30 at O’Hare’s International airport. The sky was a near perfect blue. Just across the taxiway a larger than normal group of aircraft idled, watched over by a police vehicle. I weighed the heavy iron wrench in my hand. I’d grabbed it from a mechanic’s tool box in the ready room. After watching the second plane crash into the World Trade Center live in New York there could be no question America was under attack. Word came down that at least a dozen aircraft were still unaccounted for after the FAA had ordered an unprecedented ground stop nationwide and ordered all planes out of the air immediately. A coworker believed his wife was a flight attendant on one of the hijacked flights out of Boston. Someone else heard a Lufthansa jet was headed for the terminal, still another was aiming for the Sears Tower. Downtown Chicago was evacuating. A supervisor instructed us to “clear” every aircraft in the zone, roughly 10 gates, and pulled the jetbridges off the aircraft. The biggest mouths, the bullies in the zone, refused the order, saying they weren’t paid to perform security. I went alone, dubious of my chances against unknown terrorists prepared to commit suicide runs.

Two black guys named Chuck and Bernie, just after the first tower collapsed shook their heads over a comment that just seemed to fall from my mouth about how we were now at war. Chuck tense and distant at all that was happening, replied that America would just use this as a reason to go after “colored” people. I kept a daily diary back then. I wrote his words down not realizing at the time how cryptic they were. I have never forgotten Chuck’s words. Every September 11th I look back at more and more evidence accumulating that proves those words.

History is a process, not a series of standalone episodes. Recently, researching an ancestor I have been deep in researching the Renaissance and Reformation. Like Pearl Harbor, the French Revolution, the First World War or the Roman Republic, each of those grew as a wave, building and crashing with such impact and tumult that they became pivotal or etched eternally into our collective memory. The Renaissance did not begin on a Tuesday at 2pm 1500 AD. The much touted Christian Reformation ran concurrent with monumental abuses by the Vatican, the inquisition and a defacto religious fascism with regards to thought and speech and censorship across Europe. Pearl Harbor was not the surprise attack by evil Anglo-hating Japs, but a breaking point in long running economic animosities between the US and Japan. World War One did not begin in Sarajevo with the murder of an Austrian Archduke. It began in a German fear of pan-Slavism and Russia’s growing industrialization. It began in the pig farms of Serbia whose plum sweetened pigs out-competed the lesser quality Austrian pigs for market share.

The attacks of September 11 were not the product of an evil terrorist alone, but a long process extending back to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Since September 11th the United States has only attacked smaller weaker countries of “colored” people. In every case the specter of oil has been part of the equation. In all those places the so-called remedy of global warfare and security against what was a very small and dwindling number of actual Islamic extremists has spurned a rise of fundamentalists, extremists and ever more terrorists than those early numbers could have imagined. The deaths of more than a million people, also victims of the September attacks, grows those ranks for generations to come. Big oil implored President Bush to leave Iraqi oil in the ground to drive up prices. ISIS is a willing dupe in that continued effort. In that time, while the oil purchased media mocked climate change, renewable energy, emissions controls, EPA standards and electric cars oil has more than quadrupled in price to the delight of big oil. OPEC countered the fracking boom by dragging down oil prices at a time when the West sought to punish Russian aggression by tanking prices.

We suffer religious extremism in this country as well. Unleashed by the corporate media as the easiest legal form of control to manipulate. This uniquely American extremism is a toxic mix of selective doctrine, latent violence, racial melancholia and rabid consumer excess. They are growing to a dangerous force affecting everything from race relations, the economy and political structure. Learning has been replaced by expediency via the internet as we all now work harder and harder for less and less to a smaller and smaller number of neo-oligarchs and robber barons. At least one of them is now running for president as a would-be dictator. Our children’s education is the battlefield in this country as it is collapsed in a death by a thousand cuts in favor of corporate owned schools and religio-politically filtered and reconstituted curriculum.

This country changed on September 11th. The explosion of media consolidation and politically slanted talk radio began in far greater earnest that day. I lost my retirement that day and a quarter of my pay, not because of the attacks but in the robber baron chaos that allowed corporations, like the one I worked for, to steal from their employees. Freedoms were vacated, and in the case of the Patriot Act, abandoned. More than 3000 people died that day. 600,000 died in Iraq, 60,000 in Afghanistan, thousands in Yemen. More than 5,000 young American men and women were told they were sacrificing their lives for our freedom in America, while those who sent them profited from actually stealing our freedoms. Sometimes history changes in a moment, but that moment comes at the end of a long and often overlooked history. Bush, Cheney, Clinton, arguably even Obama all ought to be in jail for their part in the destruction of this country. Trump, Hillary, Jindal, Paul and Jeb Bush rightly should be laughed out of any public consideration.

I long ago stopped lamenting the tragedy of September 11th. The vultures that descended on us were our own countrymen. It’s just that we’d gotten so fat that they are still feasting. Only now is it becoming evident that they are eating us alive.

DARK HORSE: Bernie Sanders 2016-A Tree Falls in the Woods

“I’m not dismissive,” Sanders told Meet the Press in late July. A week earlier “Black Lives Matter” activists interrupted a town hall forum featuring Sanders and fellow presidential hopeful Martin O’Malley. “I’ve been involved in the civil rights movement all of my life, and I believe that we have to deal with this issue of institutional racism.”

Sanders’ is struggling to reach Black and Latino voters. His somewhat terse response to protesters at the Netroots Nation gathering in Phoenix didn’t help win many converts. Hillary Clinton, anxiously eyeing Sanders looming in her rear view mirror quickly seized the initiative before an audience of 400 at the Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, South Carolina that the US needs to confront a history of systemic racism.

“I think we first have to acknowledge and believe that black lives matter. This is not just a slogan, this should be a guiding principle,” she told the crowd(http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/23/politics/hillary-clinton-black-lives-matter/index.html).

The incident illustrates how the campaign, at least on the Left has evolved into predominantly domestic social and economic issues. With a world more integrated than any other time in history, and amid a slew of growing international issues, keeping the election about domestic issues alone seems unlikely. That is the reality every sitting president faces on a day to day basis, a full menu of domestic and international issues.

The Right is weak on domestic issues. Perennial meddling in social welfare programs, failure to hold banks accountable, the loss of manufacturing jobs and so-called trickle-down economics have all help reverse gains made against poverty. While those issues are paramount to the nation the insinuation of international affairs into national politics cannot be over-stated. The nation and the Bush administration discovered that painfully on September 11, 2001, in which focus on domestic issues blinded officials to looming threats overseas.

At the top of that list are a number of critical events. Earlier that summer the Chinese economy, was rocked as the stock market appeared to be in freefall, driven in part by a steep slide in commodity prices, a negative for an export economy. That has a ripple effect around the world. It also predicts all manner of internal ramifications for China, who has little or no experience in dealing with this sort of free market calamity. A one day loss in the Chinese market cost US investors an estimated $60 billion. Then there are global climate concerns, Iran post nuclear deal, Russia and Ukraine, the war in Yemen and the widening conflict with ISIS. The ISIS issue took an ominous turn at the end of July.

Looking back it seemed inevitable that Turkey would be drawn into the fight against ISIS in neighboring Syria. NATO member Turkey, who has struggled with the Kurdish PKK for decades stood by in as ISIS besieged the predominantly Kurdish Syrian border town of Kobani. The US, banned from undertaking airstrikes from Turkish bases, attacked ISIS in support of the Kurds. Reports persisted that Turkey was playing a duplicitous game attempting to appease the ISIS threat on its borders. Turkey was earlier accused of purchasing black market oil from ISIS and in paying ransoms for kidnapped Turks. ISIS drew a large share of its wealth from such schemes. On July 20th all of that changed.

That day an ISIS linked suicide bomber killed 32 and wounded 104 during a press conference in the Turkish border town of Suruc (pronounced Shur-ooch). Turkey responded quickly with large scale counter-terrorism operations against ISIS. Seizing an opportunity Turkey also attacked Kurdish targets and arrested a large number of Kurds.

The event is significant since the necessity of Kurds in the region as the primary bulwark against ISIS has given Kurdish dreams of a homeland greater legitimacy. The Kurds ostensibly would drawn their greater Kurdistan across regions of Northern Iraq, Syria and Eastern Turkey. Complicating the issue, Turkey struck at ISIS targets in Syria and Kurdish forces battling ISIS in northern Iraq. NATO was quick to support Turkey, condemning terrorism in Turkey and cautioning on a proportional response by Turkey against Kurdish separatists. That sets up a potentially dangerous and unpredictable situation on the ground in the war against ISIS, which the US and coalition partners have struggled to contain in the region. It is likely the next president will step into office dealing with a conflict more chaotic and problematic than ever.

Meanwhile, on the campaign trail Bernie Sanders drew 4500 enthusiastic supporters in Kenner Louisiana, near New Orleans, eclipsing the 1000 Republican governor Bobby Jindal drew in his home state. Mitt Romney took Louisiana in 2012 with 58% to Obama’s 40%, although Obama took 80% of the vote in New Orleans. That speech was very much about domestic issues, which is what many on the Left are demanding to hear, but at some point it will prove necessary to understand how Clinton and Sanders stand on key international issues.

The key is whether or not anyone will hear Sander’s positions, given the lack of Press coverage. It begs the question that if tens of thousands of trees cheer in the forest and CNN and FOX refuse to cover them, do they actually make a sound? That remains to be seen.

Dark Horse: Bernie Sanders 2016-Charleston

At just after 8 in the evening on June 17, 2015, 21 year old Dylann Roof walked into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The sandy-haired Roof, with white supremacists ties and leanings sat quietly among the 12 African American worshippers attending a basement Bible study, including The senior pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney who was also a Democratic member of the South Carolina Senate.
Just before 9 Roof stood and pulled a pistol from a fanny pack and announced to the stunned attendees that, “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.” With that Roof began firing, stopping several times to reload. When he was finished nine were dead.

There were two other attacks against Black churches that night and the next day, one in Tennessee and the other in Virginia. In the weeks to follow, incited and by encouraged by FOX News pundits and Rightwing Talk shows, white hate groups would be suspected in at least 6 church burnings. The Charleston attack was the deadliest church shooting in American history, ranking alongside the 1991 execution-style murders at a Buddhist Temple in Waddell Arizona and the murders of 6 Sikh worshippers at the hands of a white supremacist, Wade Michael Page, at a Wisconsin temple in 2012. Since 2001 some 400 Americans have been killed by white supremacists, including almost 2 dozen law enforcement officers. In 2012 two white supremacists executed 2 Nevada police officers as they ate lunch before storming a nearby Walmart and announcing the start of a white revolution.

The Charleston attack came at a period of heightened racial tension and awareness, amid a national conversation on race which was long overdue. In the weeks and months preceding the attack an alarming trend appeared to be developing after a string of controversial deaths and assaults by police which were caught on video. Just a week earlier a police officer in Texas slammed a 14 year old girl in a swimsuit to the ground and drew his weapon after complaints that Black teen agers had attended a pool party in a predominantly white neighborhood.

After the Charleston gunman, Dylann Roof was seen in photographs with a Confederate flag became the symbol of a racist thread still evident and virulent in the American weave. Republicans quickly countered that Americans, in particular republican and southern white Americans were not racist. While that was partly true, it was obvious that the Republican Party and its Tea Party offshoot had adopted icons and legacies of a more overtly racist and traitorous past.

On the candidate trail the reaction was predictable. While all of the candidates, Republican and Democrat, condemned the shooting itself, they split along seemingly irreconcilable partisan lines. Clinton, Sanders, Chafee and O’Malley all cited America’s legacy of racism. Clinton and Sanders both called for greater gun control. Roof had obtained the gun legally through a loophole in the law which does not require documentation or licensing of person to person private sales. With a pending felony charge he was prohibited from buying the gun in a store. The Republican candidates, in contrast to Democrats, were quick to defend the Confederate flag and guns, even before the victims had been publically identified. Others on the Republican side were silent.

Former Texas governor Rick Perry, who was adamant about calling the Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hassan a terrorist instead dubbed the Charleston shooting an accident. Rand Paul jumped quickly to defend the broadest possible interpretation of the Second amendment. The NRA blamed the victims for not being armed, which included an 83 year old woman and her 7 year old granddaughter. Jeb Bush said that he didn’t know if the attack was racially motivated, then canceled a trip to Charleston. Neither Lindsay Graham nor Rick Santorum could bring themselves to admit the attack was racially motivated, despite Roof telling his surviving victims and the police that his actions were indeed racially motivated!

In fact, none of the candidates on the right could bring themselves to describe the attack in terms of domestic terrorism. The issue, which seems obvious to most on the Left and many on the Right, would indicate a growing crisis in American society that is not being squarely addressed in the media and by too many political figures on the Right, especially among the current crop of presidential candidates. Many of those same pundits demand any act committed by a Muslim to be described as terrorism. Not such demand or outrage was made regarding the Charleston Massacre.

That might point to a deeper and darker problem America faces in confronting homegrown terrorism. Former FBI agent Mike German, who specialized in domestic counterterrorism from 1988 to 2004 told Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman that:

“…you can imagine the different reaction that would have occurred if Dylann Roof was wearing an ISIS flag on his jacket rather than a Rhodesia flag. And for somebody like me who knows a lot about the white supremacist movement and having been undercover in it, seeing those symbols, seeing the target—you know, the Emanuel AME Church, like many AME churches, isn’t just the spiritual center of the black community, it’s the political center, it’s the social center, so the fact that it’s targeted fits the FBI definition, which is an act of violence intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population. And the political purpose is obvious. One of the victims, who was specifically picked out, was a state legislator. So the idea that somehow this wasn’t political, I think, says a lot about the way the FBI views terrorism.”

In 2009 the Department of Homeland Security disbanded a unit tasked with looking at domestic rightwing terror groups. Since then the number of hate groups in America has mushroomed to more than 1000 in 2008, according to the Southern Poverty Law Institute, which tracks white supremacists hate groups, to more than 2100 by 2010. Both Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh describe SPLI, for its outspoken investigations about white hate groups, as a terror group that should be closed down. Savage, through music choices and guests regularly courts a white extremist agenda paraded as populist.

What that points to is a problem with race that America seems unwilling or unable to come to terms with. Both Clinton and Sanders appeared to be in agreement on the issue of race and guns in America. Clinton forcefully condemned the shootings and was more candid than ever before regarding racism. Sen. Sanders issued a statement saying, “The Charleston church killings are a tragic reminder of the ugly stain of racism that still taints our nation.” Earlier this year, however, according the Huffington Post’s Paul Blumenthal and Ryan Grim (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/31/hillary-clinton-speeches-keystone_n_7463108.html)
Clinton took $1.6 million in speaking fees from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and TD Bank, both closely connected to the Keystone XL Pipeline. The pipeline remains a hot button issue with Progressives and Liberals who aggressively oppose the pipeline over environmental, safety and property rights concerns. Grim and Blumenthal write that:

Both banks have financial ties to TransCanada, the company behind the Keystone XL pipeline, and have advocated for a massive increase in pipeline capacity, including construction of Keystone. Further, Gordon Giffin, a CIBC board member and onetime U.S. ambassador to Canada, is a former lobbyist for TransCanada and was a contributions bundler for Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.
It is the belief that Hillary tends to play strongly to the ambiguous, except where it is politically safe and expedient. Her stand on banks is illustrative. While saying she would be tough on Wall Street…

It is arguable that the United States had not had a true statesman or stateswoman in recent history. President Jimmy Carter, John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower are the first examples that come to mind. In 1990 Sanders, running as an independent against Republican Rep. Peter Smith, benefitted from an NRA campaign against Smith who supported a ban on assault weapons. While the NRA money did not go to support Sanders, his silence was enough to allow him to beat Smith and the Democratic challenger. In 1994 Sanders voted in favor of a ban on assault weapons, a vote which some believe nearly cost him his House seat that same year.

Certainly the gun issue in America and the debate in Congress has been a contentious, complex and evolving one. There are, according to one conservative website, roughly 32000 gun deaths in, with close to a 1000 accidental shootings (which the pro-gun site attempts to minimize) and about 11000 homicides. More than half of gun deaths, almost 60% are suicides. With accidental deaths, and since most homicides are committed by acquaintances, spouses and family members, that means that gun owners are far more likely to die by a gun in the home than by a stranger’s hand. What that describes is an effort by the gun lobby to manipulate public opinion for sales, portraying a community as far more dangerous than it actually is. The gun proliferation industry has gone so far as to fictionalize even the Holocaust, pushing historical revisionism to the point of saying the Hitler’s so-called banning and confiscation of guns led to the deaths of millions of Jews.

There are numerous credible sources regarding Hitler and guns. The Nazis did not impose any gun registration or restriction laws. In fact, the Weimar government plagued with rampant violence and near insurrection between communist organizations and Nazis imposed restrictions targeting both groups. Those laws remained in place and were merely tightened in 1938 against Jews. At less than 1.5%, or about 500,000 people, the Jewish population would have merely escalated and hastened their destruction with a token insurrection, that is if enough could have foreseen the Holocaust, which to most Jews in Europe, despite the growing hate speech and isolated violence against Jews still remained unfathomable in 1938. (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1791/did-hitler-ban-gun-ownership)

For Bernie Sanders the issue resonates strongly. Sanders, the youngest of two sons, was born toPolish parents fleeing the Nazis. The war would end before the family would learn that almost the entire family in Poland had been wiped out in the Holocaust. Through the Nuremburg trials of Nazi war criminals the world and America would weigh the difference between vengeance and justice through the rule of law. Sanders father was paint salesman. Life in Brooklyn in the 1940s and 50s was defined in the hard-scrabble culture of poor and working class families. There were lessons to be learned there, Sanders, looking back at those formative years is candid about those lessons.

“I saw unfairness,” He told the Guardian newspaper, “That was the major inspiration in my politics.”

Warning: Very Offensive: Cartooning Mohammad in a Crowded Mosque

How about this; For purposely and unnecessarily inciting Muslims because that makes far more money on the rampant bigot circuit, should Pamela Geller, who is Jewish, be thrown into an oven and burned for creating an environment that recklessly offended people without purpose, and which led to the deaths of two men? Offended? What if she yelled fire in a crowded fire house, and a number of people were injured or killed in the panic? In was instrumental in the organization of a mean-spirited draw a cartoon of Mohammad contest in Garland Texas yesterday.

Geller, who runs what appears to be a nationalist Israeli front group aimed at agitating Muslims domestically as a means of bring the decades long impasse and inability of Israelis and Palestinians to get along to the United States. Her American Freedom Defense Initiative is little more than an effort to trick Americans into siding with a conflict in which both sides need a bit of a kick in the ass. By sides I mean the Israeli nationalist agitators and the Palestinian and Arab agitators who have turned hate and violence into an industry to the detriment of the great majority of Jews, Arabs and Muslims who really want no part in any of this.

Geller was the tramp who wanted to carry her masturbatory hate and business to New York busses, for no reason other than to upset Muslim fellow citizens and neighbors. So interested in defense of America and the first amendment, which doesn’t exist in Israel by the way, that she has fixated on the real threat to America. Yep, Muslims, who since September 2001 have been responsible for only a tiny fraction of violent terror incidents in America. Apparently her defense of America ignores tens of thousands of white supremacists and white neo-Nazi groups who have killed hundreds in the last decade (Detailed in previous Rev and Beer posts) as well as dozens of police officers, all of which is somehow not round the clock news like any incident around some hapless Muslim terrorist fuck up.

As it turns out yelling “fire” in a crowded theater isn’t against the law, but it does constitute reckless endangerment, which is against the law. Geller isn’t defending free speech. We are free to say what we want in the United States, however, when your only purpose is to offend, I will defend the person who busts you in the mouth. Geller, the fraud won’t face that because she hides behind her money stolen from dupes and Israeli taxpayers. She cowers in the shadows with other bigots and self-promoting garbage. She is an elitist rich kid who grew up wealthy but with no talent other than the propensity for being white trash despite her silver spoon. She is a big part of the problem and hardly a part of any solution. Please no jokes here, I’m in deep enough already. and if there ever was an argument against the first Amendment, Princess Geller is the poster brat.

Now, however, she can be branded a terrorist as well. Her actions directly led to violence. At the very least it is called aiding and abetting; that is a crime as well.

Epidemic of Death

Hidden from the news is a growing epidemic of violence by white hate groups. On Tuesday a Wisconsin State trooper was gunned down by a White Supremacist suspected in a bank robbery. Officer Trevor Casper died in a shootout with Snyder. A 59 year old bystander was also killed in the gun battle. Snyder reportedly is a member of “The Fond du Lac Boot Boys.” The secretive group is reportedly a skinhead affiliation. Snyder and 8 others were arrested in1996 after attacking Blacks and Hispanics. Snyder was carrying business cards for a West Virginia white supremacist organization, the “National Alliance.” Snyder also carried literature from the group which stated, in part:

“…we have a responsibility for the racial quality of the coming generation of our people. That no multi-racial society is a healthy society. That if the white race is to survive we must unite our people on the basis of common blood, organize them within a progressive social order and inspire them with a common set of values. That time to begin is now.”

The National Alliance splintered into several spin off organizations in 2003. In 2011, Kevin William Harpham, 36, of Addy, Washington set pipe bombs designed to cause mass casualties along the planned route of martin Luther King Jr. Memorial march. The bombs were discovered and diffused. Police also discovered links between the National Alliance and Harpham.

In March Ryan Giroux, a member of the Hammerskin Nation, a “notoriously violent” neo-Nazi group affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood killed one man and shot f others in Mesa Arizona. In stark contrast to quick and deadly police tactics with unarmed or less dangerous black suspects, police showed restraint with the still armed and defiant Giroux, who was captured using a taser.

The Wisconsin and Arizona incidents reveal a growing violent trend, virtually ignored by rightwing media sources, while relatively minor incidents involving minorities, or questionable uses of police force on minority suspects receives highlighted coverage in favor of authorities. FOX News and Salem Broadcasting, including former Illinois representative Joe Walsh covered extensively the shooting deaths of a black suspect in New York, but made little or no mention of violent attacks by white, particularly against Law Enforcement officers, which they claim to support. Some suspect Walsh of white power sympathies in his, in the view of some, apparent liberal editing of white supremacist crimes. Walsh sided with violent groups threatening violence against Law Enforcement officers during the Cliven Bundy standoff in 2014. He has been invited on numerous occasions to appear on the Revolution and Beer Show to defend his actions, but so far has not responded.

Since September 11, 2001, more Americans have been killed on US soil by white supremacists than by so-called Muslim extremists. White supremacist groups have been linked to the deaths of more than 400 Americans across the United States, including dozens of Law Enforcement Officers.

Murder Flight

The Crash of Flight 9525, and how the Aviation Industry weighs Profit over Safety.

2006. That was the last time anyone had a substantive discussion about cameras in the cockpit, CIRs, In the wake of this latest air disaster the time to rediscover that critical conversation is now. And while the likelihood that CIRs might have prevented the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525, lessons and data learned from previous crashes continue to make flying the safest form of travel on the planet. The logic and arguments against CIRs simply do not stand scrutiny or make any sense.

At the time of this report investigators were leaning more and more to the stark and unsettling conclusion that the co-pilot, 28-year-old Andreas Lubitz, deliberately crashed the aircraft in the French Alps during what would have been a very routine 2 hour flight between Barcelona and Dusseldorf. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, with 150 passengers and crew is operated by a subsidiary of Lufthansa, Germany’s national carrier. Indications are that Lubitz did not suffer any medical condition. The pilot could be heard knocking on the door, and then attempting to smash open the door in the seconds before the aircraft slammed into a mountainside, killing all aboard instantly.

The issue of CIRs, Cockpit Image recorders has never received serious or adequate debate by government regulating bodies, airlines or the public for that matter. The media also has failed in taking up the issue, even despite their general hysteria over security and terrorism. Rand Paul’s sales driven effort to arm pilots last year garnered far greater media attention. That virtual blackout leaves commercial airlines, their employees and most especially the flying public vulnerable to disaster like Flight 9525, and eliminates a critical tool for investigators.

Slow Progress

Despite recommendations from the NTSB, FAA, The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the nonprofit, nongovernmental body, the European Organization for Civil Aviation (EUROCAE), progress has been desperately slow in coming. Much of the focus was on real-time streaming of data from the aircraft, something that was deemed unfeasible and prohibitively expensive. The larger question of building upon data collection for crash and incident investigations was all but dropped. The necessity to augment with images/video current monitoring and collection systems like the Cockpit Voice Recorders, CVRs, and Flight Data Recorders, FDRs, the so-called Black Boxes, would seem to be elementary. Resistance to CIRs has been fierce.

A June 2009 FAA report, Federal Aviation Administration FDM Systems and NORSEE, estimated the cost of CIRs installed or retrofitted on commercial aircraft to be between $10 and 20 thousand Dollars USD per aircraft. That is indeed a sizeable price tag, but then so are catastrophic disasters and ignorance. Each carries a monumental price tag. However, a revolution in recordable media has occurred in the last 6-7 years since the FAA report was issued. There has been a substantial increase in storage capacity, quality, as well as reductions in weight, durability and size. More than that, speaking directly to financial considerations, there have been amazing reductions in the cost of that media, in some instances a doubling or quadrupling of storage capacity for a fraction of the cost. Given all of that, arguments and opposition to CIRs at the airline level become painfully thin and weak.

The airline Pilots Association, ALPA, the industry’s largest pilot’s union, with over 64,000 members continues to be the loudest opponent to CIRs. Their concerns center almost solely around privacy issues. Communications and actions by pilots in the cockpit are already recorded and preserved on the CVR and FDR. Numerous court rulings contradict the notion of blanket privacy in the workplace; the flight deck of a commercial aircraft should be no different.

Prevention

CIRs, like currently required CVRs and FDRs collect raw data for investigators after an incident has occurred. Innovation and understanding gleaned from previous incidents and the anticipation of future incidents feeds the body of data critical to designing safer aircraft and in preventing future accidents. It simply makes no rational sense to ignore a critical body of data. Such a system would have proved a powerful tool in determining in a timelier manner then destruction of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 over the Ukraine in July 2014. The lack of CIRs is rather like blindfolding law enforcement or playing only the audio portion of a bank robbery. It simply does not make any sense.

It is time to rekindle that conversation. CIRs would not have prevented to tragedy of Flight 9525, but it might help prevent future such disasters. What is required are not hollow recommendations by bodies without legislative or oversight authority. What is required is legislation that would require CIRs on all commercial aircraft as a first step. Next would be a global requirement by all commercial carriers.

Iran letter: Treason or Hypocrisy?

There is a temptation here to give this whole mess a simple talk radio name. “letter gate,” the “Cotton Coup” or the “Netanyahu Surprise.” I like that one simply because it describes the school girl swoon the Republicans have now that they have full abandoned our own president, shoved aside the constitution and how treaties are forced and pushed themselves, for the first time in our history, to the forefront of international diplomacy. Congress persons have always had a certain roll, to be fair, but never by posturing themselves in opposition so publically and aggressively to purposely embarrass the President and unilaterally drive their own international agenda as a dual government.

Don’t like Obama? If that’s the case you may thing this is all about nothing, and that if Obama is so incompetent, or evil in siding with the evil god-hating anti-MeriKan Muslim Mullahs of Iran, then congress should instigate a paper coup and drawn the nation’s proverbial wagons around the 51st state of Israel and their playhouse President Netanyahu. However, if you are not a complete and total idiot…No.

No use in belaboring an endless distraction from growing and pressing real issues; the pundits will play and distract the nation with treason. Real treason has occurred in this nation. Corporations and banks commit treason every day. Halliburton under Cheney was working with the Iranians and Iraqis during US-led and sponsored sanctions and nothing happened. The financial crisis of 2008 which nearly sank the nation put America’s future and security at risk: Not a single arrest. HSBC actually held and shielded accounts for drug cartels and Al Qaeda. Their management should have been dragged into the street and sumari… whew, almost got carried away.

Anyway, it comes down to something simple that even Republicans can understand. They like to filter everything through a corporate business perversion. So, company A is negotiating with company B. The accounting department hates their own CEO, who is conducting the negotiation to a contract. Amid those contract negotiations, a number of salaried accountants decide to disrupt the contract by making it known that they hate the CEO so much that any contract created won’t be followed by part of Company A. The rest of the business world sees that and no longer will do business with Company A, because who can trust them?

It is treason. Congress can make its disagreements known to their constituents and to the president, but when they invite a foreign leader to speak and afford that foreign leader more respect than their own. When they deride and call him all sorts of dastardly names and when they break both protocol and the constitutional separation of powers-law- that is treason. Sorry, Lefties, however. If this government is so deep in the sack with a large bank who also cozies up and does business with our supposed enemies, the ones who committed the September 11 attacks (feeling played yet) then nobody will be held accountable here either.
