David Bowie Dead, just in Time

David Bowie is Dead. Hmm. There’s a joke by comedian Doug Stanhope that goes something like this; maybe Kurt Cobain didn’t die too young. Maybe he was just out of stuff. can you imagine if Jimmy Hendrix had lived and then you see him doing half-time duets with Elton John, singing Rocket Man. And you’d say, how sad is that, why didn’t he just die? What if Lenny Bruce took over for Andy Rooney, some crusty old man bitching about ATM fees…

This society clings a little, rather, a lot too hard to the quantity of life instead of the quality of it. I’ve had people brag how they never have had a major accident or broken a bone. I’ve broken 11 major bones, excluding most of my fingers and toes, caught a ricochet bullet in the shin, suffered so many concussions that a neurosurgeon friend once said he wouldn’t even guess at a count. The scars on my body are a road map of my life. Car accidents, bike accidents. I’ve been shot at more times than I can count, not to mention being bombed and shelled as well, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I’ve written 11 books, published 5, had 2 critically acclaimed plays, and painted artwork that is now all over the world. I’ve done everything, live a war, seen the worst man can do and see the most we are capable of. I’ve fought for the least among us and against injustice without financial reward; and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I strove for experiences, to break out of my comfort zone and to explore fully the spectrum of human emotion. I will carry those in the only suitcase I can carry from this life, happy there isn’t room for anything else in that bag. I’m not David Bowie, but he wasn’t me either.

As for David Bowie’s passing? Funny, yesterday morning, driving the wife to work, I was suddenly in the mood to hear some of his music. Working on the new novel later that morning, I casually explored some of his lesser known work. When the wife announced that he’d died this morning, my first reaction was, well, that’s the end of an era.

One thing is certain, just being born is responsible for more human suffering and carries, by responsible estimation, nearly a 100% mortality rate. Trust me, I spent all night double checking the statistics. Which begs the question of which David Bowie, or you, would you rather have? David Bowie, fans of Ricky Gervais will recall, played a bit part in the TV show Extras, little more than a decade ago. His song parody of Gervais’ character was about not selling out, which Bowie never did.

So, again, which Bowie do you want? How much sadder would it be to see him years from now, hobbled in a wheel chair, oxygen tubes up his nose, bent and mumbling to himself grasping desperately against eternity for every breath, clinging to an ever more distant past in which he is less and less a shadow, or the man who bowed gracefully when he was finished, walking proudly from the stage of life to eternity?

The lesson here is live a life of quality. Experience, suffer, exalt, explore, fail, rise up again in as passionate a life as you can dare. That’s the stuff of our lives. back to Stanhope, “your sins are the only thing that make you interesting!” one of my grandfather’s, many years ago, as he was dying of cancer, remarked to me that being eaten by a bear was the better fate. I put that in my first book 25 years later.

And it’s true. Recall the guy some years back you got killed by an escaped tiger at the San Diego zoo. What happened to Bob? He got eaten by a tiger, in California! Wow, that’s incredible. As opposed to, did you hear about Bob? yeah, after an unfulfilling life as a middle manager in an actuarial firm, all those high calorie lunches finally got the better of him. Died right at his cubicle, just as his divorce was about to be final as well.

Quantity is a beggar’s game, because in the face of eternity, it is meaningless. Quantity is the existential equivalent of a flat line. Take a page from Bowie and good theatre people and know when its time to take a bow, and leave them wanting more. Rock on, David Bowie!

On Gun Porn. Did you know:

Israel is more anti-gun than Obama.

They regulate, ownership, the type of weapon and the amount of ammo an owner can have or buy. Sales and transfer of guns and ammo are strictly regulated, with stiff penalties for violations. Gun ownership is very low, and so are homicides and gun suicides. The US is first in ownership, Israel 80th. All weapons and ammo are marked. Gun manufacturers must keep records of every weapon produced. In Israel, the law does require that a record of the acquisition, possession and transfer of each privately held firearm be retained in an official register, unlike the US. In Israel, gun owners must re-apply and re-qualify for their firearm license every three years, unlike the US.

In Israel, authorities maintain a record of individual civilians licensed to acquire, possess, sell or transfer a firearm or ammunition, unlike the US. The minimum age for gun ownership in Israel is 27 years. Applicants for a gun owner’s license in Israel are required to establish a genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example self-defense, hunting and sport, unlike the US. The US ranks 91st in the world for per capita murder rate, compared with Israel at 144th.

So the next time you hear gun pornographers from the right and the NRA say we should look to Israel as an example on guns, maybe the Right is, well right!

Exclusive: Anita Alvarez on Que4 Radio

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez will hold a very exclusive press conference on Que4 Radio’s Revolution and Beer program Saturday at 11am. Alvarez, embattled over her handling of the Laquan McDonald case, which took more than a year before charges were filed in that case, reports that her office will file charges in a case her office reports will be groundbreaking, shocking and historic. We don’t know many details and have been asked not to report or speculate ahead of the announcement Saturday at 11am. What we do know is that the murder investigation spanned several continents and involved tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of investigators. Reports are that the victim was killed by a knife or knives, but details remain very sketchy right now. One unconfirmed report from Que4 Radio indicates a possible connection that includes the Cooking Channel. That is all we know. Ms. Alvarez and her office is keeping a very tight lid on this, and is deflecting inquiries with “No comment at this time,” or complete denial.

A photo from the crime scene leaked to Que4:

VETTING A REFUGEE LIE

boatpeople1Republicans, like Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson and Rebublican Governors want to haIt settlement of Syrian refugees in the wake of the Paris attacks. They claim a necessity to fully vet each individual. They are lying. It is the excuse of bigots and bureaucrats. Republicans, the Right and weak-kneed Democrats on the Left merely throw around the idea of vetting Syrian Refugees, but it is a ruse to excuse their personal bias, inaction and lack of conscience.

There is no vetting process for Refugees. There is no process to “vet” a refugee as if they were accepting a position in the NSA, or even applying for a job at Taco Bell. Rarely do refugees have valid identification. That is the definition of Refugee. These are people fleeing burning villages, imminent death most often in a panic. The likelihood they will have carefully packed and carried three forms of ID, school and government records, an itinerary and a list of references is unlikely. Usually those references are either trying to kill them or drive them from their homes, are dead or also a refugee.

Why wasn’t the same panic applied to the estimated 2 million Vietnamese boat people who fled their war torn country in flimsy and overcrowded boats and ships. There were no cries to leave them floundering at sea just in case there was, out of 2 million, a couple of Viet Cong infiltrators. Or Cuban refugees from the Castro regime, who were welcomed in part as a slight because of the political impasse between the US and Cuban governments. Some of those actually went on to commit acts of terrorism against Cuban civilians with the support of the US government, such as Cubana Airlines Flight 455. In the United States some 11 million Undocumented Immigrants are not filtered through some fraudulent “vetting” process, hence the “Undocumented” part. The same was true from German and European refugees after the Second World War, including orphans and Holocaust victims. boat bosnia199507-refugees_1508531i

This wholly new effort to stop Syrian Refugees from being settled in the US, or even receiving nominally humane shelter and treatment as Winter encroaches is rooted in anti-Muslim fear and bigotry. Crime in Muslim communities is far lower than in many other communities. No community is without crime. There are no official statistics, nor should there be, on crime broken down by religion. It should be noted strongly, however, that Muslims are the only group singled out in news stories by their religion. That is, the media specifically mentions religion, unlike headlines describing Catholics, Jews, Hindus or even Atheists. A headline reading “Jew robs bank,” or “”Christian guns down 3 in shooting spree” would cause immediate outrage.

Milwaukee Sheriff calls #BlackLivesMatter Terrorists

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said on Twitter Tuesday that Before long, “Black Lies Matter will join forces with ISIS to b(r)ing down our legal constituted republic. You heard it first here.” It was an open comparison with a foreign terrorist group. Speaking this morning on a rightwing radio show in Chicago Clarke, now the darling o the rightwing media also linked ISIS with Iran, although the two are enemies. Iran currently is a was with ISIs.

He spoke on AM560 in Chicago, known for it attacks Clarke’s conspiracy paranoia would just be the confused ramblings of a fool if his NRA backed elected official did not have the power of life and death over people. This from Salon earlier this year:

“Of course, deflection is an effective tactic. A real organization doing a good deal of terrorizing is Clarke’s own Milwaukee police department, which according to Salon has been sued for dozens of illegal strip searches and has seen multiple officer-involved killings of unarmed black citizens during Clarke’s tenure, including Dontre Hamilton in 2014 and Derek Williams in 2011. What do black citizens of Milwaukee have to fear from terrorists overseas when the threat of death hangs over them from their own police everyday?”

Cark’s framing of #BLM as a terror organization, claiming also that ISIS is infiltrating SEIU and other labor organizations brings up disturbing questions about the safety and civil rights of civilians in Milwaukee County. Will or are his officers harassing or targeting anyone displaying #BlackLivesMatter signs? Even more, Clarke believes and said this morning that America can and should arrest its way out of the current social and economic turmoil plaguing the inner cities and poor.

Yet Clarke is silent on economic development, the banks and Wall Street in creating the foreclosure crisis which has crippled Black, minority and poor communities, and has called for open armed rebellion against any reasonable gun legislation. Most guns used in crimes in Milwaukee, like neighboring Chicago come from guns bought legally which are then given r sold to criminals; so-called straw purchases. Badger Guns in Milwaukee was found liable this month in a straw purchased linked to the shooting of two police officers. Ironically, Clarke’s own department could see a financial windfall from lawsuit against Badger and other gun outlets accused of straw purchases.

Meanwhile, the voters must realize that the true threat of terror faced n Milwaukee County comes from ulra-authoritarians, media hounds and protectors of the culture of greed, racism and corruption that have driven inner cities and the poor into corners of desperation in a society which then blames the symptoms but ignores the disease.

Our interview with Bill Ayers Tomorrow

I have received a great deal of feedback regarding Saturday’s interview with Bill Ayers. This is the introduction I am working to:

Modern media tends to render the individual as cartoons, filler for an endless news cycle or worse, ideological bludgeons for propaganda and hyperbole. But before us today sits a man of flesh and blood. This interview is not a response to the Right’s demonization of Bill Ayers, but an attempt to render his humanness more fully. Like everyone of us he is filled with contradictions, faults, blessings, burdens, dreams and regrets. Bill Ayers chose a path in life that set him on a collision course with the state in its prosecution of a wholly unnecessary war and its persecution against an American system of racial and social apartheid. On the frontlines of any struggle for justice there is friction, confusion, passion, anger; danger. While the path becomes unclear the struggle becomes everything, the world becomes an outside place eclipsed not by the struggle itself, but in the resistance wielded by the oppressor.

What did the tumult of the 1960s and early 1970s accomplish, with the days of rage, protest, unrest and, yes, violence or the threat of violence? In a speech last year at Dartmouth Ayers asked an audience if they opposed slavery and then reminded that audience that before the civil war and during the founding of this nation that they would have been considered abolitionists in opposition to their nation, government and economy all of which relied on slavery. Ayers, as a member of the controversial and decidedly militant Weather Underground stood, sometimes violently, but always resolutely against the deaths in Southeast Asia, over the course of more than a decade of war, of more than 2 million people, including 58000 Americans. The Vietnam-era lottery and draft was an illusion of populism with disproportionately high numbers of minorities and poor pressed into service, while the wealthy, like Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Ted Nugent. Michael Savage and many more able to avoid service.

Ayers and the Weather Underground stood unwavering with Black Americans struggling for basic civil rights. Recall that Black veterans were barred from the benefits of the GI Bill and veterans benefits after the second world war, advantages that built the middle class in this country. The stark injustices and hypocrisies they struggled to correct were no different from the struggle of miners on Blair Mountain, John Brown, Sojourner Truth, Jeremy Hammond, Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden.

There is a myth of non-violence in struggles for justice. An emasculated and reconstructed pacifist Gandhi once said “…Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor.”

Protest and discontent are words of agitation. Protest should rightly be peaceful if the oppressor is accepting of change and willing to dialogue, but when the tactic of the oppressor is greater oppression and tyranny then violence must always remain in the arsenal of the oppressed. Malcolm X said “Kill that Dog! If a man uses a dog to keep you from what is rightfully yours, kill that dog!” A protest without the possibility of violence, should the state choose the road of greater oppression is a parade, and parades are for children and clowns.

Does God Hate Breakfast?

I’m having some trouble with the Bible. If it truly is the word of God, why does he leave so many of the most important lessons in life out? For example, my dad is one of the toughest and bravest guys I know. He was a union guy, in a factory and a volunteer fireman, but he couldn’t accomplish anything without a cup of coffee in the morning. But nowhere in the Bible is there a story that starts with, “After his morning coffee the lord went forth and smote…”

For that matter, my whole life I have been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and yet, the Bible, Torah and Koran are all silent on this subject. Why? Wouldn’t it be a great lesson to kids if David’s mom was heard to say, “Goliath can wait until you’ve had breakfast. How are you going to slay a giant and you haven’t had breakfast? Oh, and don’t forget your helmet and knee pads!”michael-crawford-david-and-goliath-and-david-s-personal-trainer-rolf-new-yorker-cartoon

Then again, David would have also benefitted from exercise, right? Maybe a few pushups, jog a little, lift some heavy stones. Yet, he isn’t even described as practicing the slingshot. That seems fundamental. There is more to learn from the golfing scene from the 1970s comedy Animal House with John Belushi regarding practice than in any holy book. but exercise should be a given, right? Jesus walked the desert for who knows how long, but no where does it say to the rest of us, get your big butts up and go for a walk. The only downside I can see is that with all those healthy hot looking people in Mosques, Temples and churches, singles bars and e-harmony might go out of business. To quote Jim Gaffigan, as you turn to an attractive neighbor in church, “Peace be with you, and an extra piece for you…”

The commandments fall short as well. Unless I’m a peasant shepherd, a few of them just are sort of irrelevant. A few suggestions, if I might, would update the commandments, such as, Don’t fart in a crowded elevator, hilarious though it may be if you are the farter, not the fartee. How about, Thou’t shall not flip other drivers off, or drive like a jerk when entering and leaving a place of worship. That’s right, gold Toyota, you know who you are. Maybe not playing with food would be a good one for kids. I got smacked and grounded for that all the time, and yet never needed the Thou shall’t not kill rule.

Finally, we are warned of deviant sexual acts by clergy and throughout holy texts (insert your own jokes here). Marriage, we are also told, is sacred, and yet not much in the way of real world marriage advice. The idea that a woman shall be subservient to her husband has caused us nothing but trouble, while real world advice is missing. After 900 years of marriage -that’s how old they say Noah was in the Bible- I’m guessing relations between he and Mrs. Noah(No last name here? That seems a bit presumptuous. I have like 8 friends named Bill) were getting a bit, shall we say, predictable. Perhaps a bit of advice on how to liven up the captain’s quarters aboard the Ark a bit would have been in order. The first real Love Boat! I’m thinking a bit of role playing perhaps. I can hear Noah’s wife saying, “I’ll be the milk maiden tonight, and you be the lost shepherds boy…”

Along those lines, and I’m just throwing this one out there, you can all decide for yourselves, but isn’t S & M truly the consensual adult embodiment of the Golden Rule? Do onto others, and all that? Just sayin’…

Dark Horse: Dominating the Message

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is protecting Hillary Clinton. The Right is protecting Hillary Clinton. The October 13 Democratic debate should rightly be the showdown between Clinton and Sanders. Even Rightwing talk shows this morning, supposedly animated against Mrs. Clinton were silent about the debate. There is a great deal revealed in that silence.

Contrast that to station-hyped viewing parties, and near constant coverage of the Republican debates. CNN has been comparatively low key about their own debate, despite the outpouring of support for candidates like Sanders.

The comparison between Clinton and Sanders could hardly be greater, and while Clinton has rebounded a bit given a slightly less aggressive speaking schedule by Sanders, revelations that the Benghazi hearings were a staged partisan political attack and a near blackout of Sanders coverage by corporate news conglomerates, Sanders last week hit a milestone by reaching 1 million individual donations.

For the Republicans and their network marketing apparatchiks it is about dominating the message. That message has been fully directed at Hillary, the presumptive and predetermined nominee. Their message, having fully lost Hispanic and Black voters going into 2016 is to polarize voters along racial lines. Guns, fear, terrorism, immigration and so called non-traditional American values are tactics directed at white voters. Overheard are fears that the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned of, and which drove us into wars in Vietnam and the Middle East is coaxing a crisis with Russia and Syria as a distraction from true issues pertinent to this election.

Sanders would have the argument about social and economic issues. Those are the real issues critical to the US, to the poor and working middle class. But the Party democrats and party republicans each are guilty of protecting policies threatening social safety nets, protecting and coddling banks and who are more beholden to the wealthy and powerful to the detriment of the poor and middleclass Americans. For those republicans and democrats and their corporate cronies the government has become a cash machine at the taxpayer’s expense, and a means of privilege and power eschewed and feared by the framers of the constitution.

Hype, marketing and advertising brought nearly unprecedented numbers of viewers to the republican debates. By design and admission none of that was used for the democratic debate. Given that Sanders, still drawing larger crowds than nearly every other legitimate candidate combined, has been the target of derision or simply ignored by both the apparatchik republicans and democrats the reason seems clear.

The parties are dominating the message. Sanders is the wise old man out who stumbled into a cocktail party full of idiots. Sorry, but those idiots are not about to entertain his intelligent notions. But it does underscore the irrelevancy of party politics. Sanders’ supporters will have to muscle him through on their own. Don’t wait for the nomination that will never come. If Sanders has a chance, it will be as the first ever write-in candidate in the history of the Republic to become president.

PUMPKIN THIS! The Revolt continues…

I could not be more serious about the revolt against pumpkin beer, and lattes and pumpkin flavored everything. Since apparently we can’t have gun free zones, I am declaring Que4 radio a Pumpkin Free Zone Besides, that rule will be far easier to monitor. Is that a pumpkin in your pants or…bKYtCB1d7LeYcXTeE_o

Tomorrow on the Revolution and Beer show (Saturdays 11am-1pm, www.que4.org) Your headquarters for the Anti-Pumpkin Beer Insurgency continues.

How serious am I about this? First, I once was a Pumpkin Beer drinker. I am now two years clean. Second, like voting for Rahm, Hillary, Trump, Bush or Rauner with the refrain “Any body but…” I am instituting the ABPB “Anything but Pumpkin Beer.” I am so completely and eternally opposed to Pumpkin Beer that on the show I will even resort to, to…Tune in tomorrow to see how low on the beer totem I will sink before resorting to Pumpkin. I have a list. I’m not even sure yet.

ABPB OR DEATH!!!

A Deadly Gamble

First, Vladimir Putin is not Hitler. Not even close. Putin is hampered by a nationally fatal shortsightedness, blinded by the prism of Russian history and culture, and torn between modernizing an oil weighted economy and appeasing oligarchs who could sieze control of the country, or at least split into the Balkan-type civil fracturing of a nuclear power. That isn’t altogether different from the United States, by the way.

In my 2014 book, A TRAGIC FATE: Politics, Oil, the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and the Looming Threats to Civil Aviation Kindle Edition by WC TURCK http://www.amazon.com/TRAGIC-FATE-Politics-Malaysia-Airlines-ebook/dp/B00RPXWDPK I described the dangerous position Russia has found itself, desperately grasping for economic and social equilibrium through the control of oil and gas reserves.

The Syrian crisis illustrates Putin’s precarious position precisely. First, the historic correction of oil prices, affected by a sluggish global economy, de-escalation between Iran and the West, the end of supply-chain disrupting wars, Fracking and OPEC’s assault on Fracking’s profitability, carbon emission initiatives and green technology threatens Putin’s economy and security. More than 2/3 of the Russian economy is based on oil revenues. Low prices are devastating to Russia, exactly the opposite of America’s consumer-based economy. Tensions in Syria with the insertion of Russia’s military appear to have driven a spike in oil prices, opening October 1st at nearly $47.

Second, Western, and particularly US policy and action in Syria’s civil war has proved a complete failure. According to the International Business Times Syria has ” 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil as of January 2013, which makes it the largest proved reserve of crude oil in the eastern Mediterranean according to the Oil & Gas Journal estimate.”

While the US wants Syrian President Assad out, envisioning a chaotic scenario akin to the Libyan debacle, that leaves the door wide open for Putin and Russia to step inside. The airstrikes this week confirmed that Putin is less interested in assailing ISIS than he is in supporting Assad.

The pay off for Russia is clear. Syria possesses vast reserves of oil, gas and oil shale as yet untapped because of the fighting. Think of Syria as something of a mini-Crimea, which Putin siezed from Ukraine because of its strategic interest and proximity to Black Sea oil and gas reserves. If Putin, as he sees it, can end the fighting and alleviate pressure on Damascus, or sweep it off into a corner of the country the appreciation of Assad would pay untold dividends for Putin.

It is all short-sighted of course. The world will only continue moving father and farther away from reliance on fossil fuels. Putin and his government have shown little or no inclination in evolving and adapting to that eventuality. That short-sightedness may be the most dangerous component of all of this. No matter what direction Putin goes, without divesting from oil and gas as the bulwark of his economy, disaster and danger are only a heartbeat away.
