Syria: The Left has lost its way(The right never knew the way)

Marketing. Modern activism has become the victim of the same obtuse and hysterical marketing that has plagued the rest of our culture, particularly our friends on the right. The looming debacle over the Syrian civil war is a sublime case in point. I am stunned by a loss of idealism and integrity by many on the left. Not for their opposition to the possibility of war or a limited attack against Syria’s Assad regime, advertised as an effort to degrade his ability to launch Chemical attacks on his own civilians, but by the chicken crap reasons the Left eschews action in Syria.

From Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fl.) to Ed Schultz there is this refrain about angering Assad, or the fear that he might hit us back. Not sure that many police officers have the luxury of refusing to answer calls because a perp might lash out. If you get into a fight, you are in the fight to win, even if winning is letting some would-be bully, like Assad, that every time he gets out of line, or crosses a line, he knows that someone bigger and meaner will give him a bust in the chops. If that bigger and meaner guy is acting to protect someone smaller and weaker, what could be a nobler cause? If you know someone is beating his children and you do nothing, and cop the attitude that it is their fight, and why should I get involved, well, that says more about you than about the abuser.

And that may be the most dangerous revelation of all of this, that we are not afraid of principles, only to stand for them. We are afraid of the fight, the just and righteous fight. That betrays to the world a dreadful lack of resolve, courage and confidence.

The left is also pushing a panic narrative describing how there is controversy over who fired the latest chemical weapon that killed scores of Syrian civilians. There is no serious debate that Assad was responsible. First and foremost, the Assad regime has not denied using them. Citing the Alternative media only goes so far. So-called Alternative media, where one could also find stories about an SAS hit squad offing Lady Diana, Black seeds can cure anything, the ongoing prediction of imminent American collapse(Always two years away), something insipid from Glenn Beck, Aliens living among us and Russian pictures of a soul leaving a body, has its own issues with accuracy and reality. Anything in the Alternative media, like the corporate and status quo media should come with heaping scoops of skepticism.

And what happened to my fellow Lefties who long cried and advocated for a world without borders? Suddenly those same Lefties have retreated to a defense of stateism, and retreated from the ideals of going to the aid of our fellow human being? Where are my lefty pals who dreamed of one world and a brotherhood of all people? Their argument that this isn’t our fight, that it is a religious fight, a civil war, or that we need to worry about “our” people first would seem to support FOX News’ refrain that this is indeed a Center Right nation, and not at all a Progressive nation. It would seem to affirm that we do indeed have more in favor of the Ron and Rand Paul’s, and the Ayn Randian morality of self-centered culture, and that all the blathering by Progressives and Liberals the last couple of decades is as ideological and substantive as choosing up sides for a high school field hockey game.

Last is this fiction of Al Qa’eda in Syria. Certainly they are there. They are proving themselves in those small numbers as willing to stand and sacrifice for their ideals and are winning the hearts and minds of victimized and lost Syrians. We are not. Al Qa’eda, despite the hysteria over Benghazi was on the wane. They are capitalizing on this tragedy to our detriment as we cower and withdraw from the world, except where it will make us money. Again, “in our interest,” long the argument of the Right is now the chorus of the Left. But Al Qa’eda is more benefitting from pro-Assad propagandists, and the US has been tricked into their inflated presence and the fear of that terror collective. Shame on us.

Skepticism in all things is healthy, and there is ample history to support being ultimately skeptical of this government. They have not served us well, and they undermine our national credibility by acting purely on money-driven interests. But the debate should be to find the truth as a means of making decisions on doing the right thing, not in doing what benefits our protected and insulated corner of the planet. We should be the big mean guy with the big heart that is that shining city on the hill, who is that last best hope for mankind. The right won’t do it, and the Left is losing it. Find your selves again, my Leftist friends, and I pray you find yourself Progressive and not reactionary.

Reactionary of The Week: Penis Riot!

putin

Between this and the upcoming play that I’ve written and produced, “The People’s Republic of Edward Snowden,” the likelihood that I’ll be welcomed in Russia any time soon is rather remote. That’s all right though. I hear the Chinese are still a bit pissed at my loud and vocal disappointments over their little massacre in Tiananmen Square back in 1989. Not like I was jumping on a plane tomorrow, so whatever. For that matter, after this, I probably won’t be welcome in many fundamentalist-leaning parts of this country. Have I ever told you how much there is to do in the City of Chicago? It’s almost bottomless with cultural diversity, as long as you don’t mind block-to-block segregation, and huge swaths of the city (usually more melanin deficient areas) neglected to the point of post-apocalyptic nightmare scenarios, but I digress.

It’s just that, at Revolution & Beer, we take hypocrisy and right-wing extremism very seriously. That said, Vladimir Putin serves these ingredients to the world with a fresh out-of-the-wok Yakisoba that would make Yoshihiro Murata nervously start sharpening his knives. But recently he’s done us all one better in the great human leap backwards.

While homophobia is nothing new in the history of power-hungry macho patriarchs hell-bent on intruding into people’s private lives when they disagree with them, the full frontal assault against homosexuals sounds yet another warning siren that too many of our species enjoy moon-walking on human rights and true liberty. Yes, the LGBTQ community is fighting the fight full-on now, but we all risk damage if we don’t “stand our ground.” How does that make your individualist streak feel? Doesn’t affect you? Well, first they came for…

Reeking Off Your Shirt

Question: does anyone see the really twisted logic in someone who professes himself as straight persecuting a band called Pussy Riot? The heter-over-confidence spews forth with all the questioning of a high school freshman’s first locker room shower experience. I mean, after all, it’s not like it was an actual riot that had to be put-down with hoses. And, from a sexually non-repressed perspective, would it be so bad if they actually did riot? Even a little? And, from a sex-positive perspective: what’s supposed to be liberatory or fun about extinguishing such a thing?

What should we make of this manly man who promotes himself as a progressive alpha male. Surely you’ve been seduced by the display of studly (homo-erotic?) topless photos of his excellency fishing, hunting, and engaging in the very non-gay activity of riding horses bareback shirtless in an Indiana Jones hat, dribbling-out laws and programs denying the simplest human rights for homosexuals in Russia. And in all seriousness, this issue is a test for the sincerity of the human race’s so-called declarations and pretense at human rights; and progress.

On the show some weeks ago we discussed women’s rights, and how they cannot be judged episodically. That is to say that the fact that Maggie in accounting gets a big raise or a promotion, or can vote and drive a car in St. Louis, isn’t evidence that sexism has ended. Does she have autonomy over her own body, or can the state intercede? More importantly, those rights must be judged amid the totality of the quality of rights the world over. The greatest of rights in one part of the world are degraded by the lack of rights elsewhere.

Feminism and Beer prt 2 here.

WOW!! Did you hear there are now annual Gay Pride Parades in cities across America?!

Yes, but we’re still dealing with nominal acceptance in much of the country, and significant acrimony from the Right-wing community about something that they have the full liberty not to engage in. This regardless of the fact that homosexual relationships are comparable in outcome to heterosexual ones, and that homosexuals contribute just as much if not more to growth and creativity within the U.S. economy. The far right evidently believes that co-existence, or allowing it, means willful participation. They’re just afraid we’re all going to turn gay. They really care that much.

While it is no longer a crime to be gay, or won’t any longer lead to a court martial or dismissal from the military, the reality of gay marriage being legal in several states still feels tentative. The culture still pretends anything not aligned with a strict bipolar sexuality is deviant, or is nominally tolerated. That carries a social sort of oppression on truly arbitrary and interchangeable terms that is far more potent and dangerous, and antithetical to liberty than any government could conceive on its own. When the government tacitly or overtly supports or encourages discrimination or worse, there should be an outcry from all people of conscience or humanity.

For anyone, this video of these Russian kids being harassed, tortured, and terrorized for their supposed sexuality should be an outrage.

Not only are these kids tormented and scarred far worse than any personal pejorative of “gayness” could ever accomplish, but these savages delight so much in their terrorism; reminiscent of images of German soldiers delighting as they teased and taunted Jews during the Holocaust. You could never accuse Nazi wannabes of being inconsistent in their tactics. Long live Neo-Fascism! :p

The true danger here is in becoming subjective about humanity and the humanity of others. Human rights must remain human rights without qualification, and the standard must be to hold oppressors accountable. It is Putin’s discriminatory laws and attitudes regarding homosexuals that threaten to make everyone’s rights ultimately negotiable. Perhaps we should deem his approach a “Penis Riot,” but that one has been raging for centuries.

Revolution and Beer Reactionary of the week: Dis-elected representative, and ideological masturbator Joe Walsh.

Joe_WalshIt is easy to understand why the unseated right wing former representative-turned-blowhard on AM560 Joe Walsh dislikes Wisconsin State Senator Lena Taylor. For one, she supported the Madison protests against Governor Walker’s bullying of teachers, fireman, garbage men and cops. Two, she’s African American, in fact the only African American woman in the Wisconsin senate. And three, she was reelected, unlike the loud Mister Walsh, who inserted himself into American politics, unfortunately via the faux wave of the Tea Party. And when that wave crashed and was gone, so too was ole Joe’s political career.

On his basis-for-lack-of-reality radio show Monday night he took issue with Taylor regarding comments on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” with Ed Schultz, in which she likened the actions of her Republican State counterparts to the Taliban during last week’s fiery abortion debate in Madison.

The comments came after Senate President, Republican Mike Ellis abruptly cut off debate on the issue while another democrat Senator Kathleen Vinehout read aloud letters from female constituents concerned over a bill that would make ultrasounds mandatory for any woman considering an abortion. It is a pattern repeated time and again by Republican controlled legislatures around the nation as they seek to roll back the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that made a woman’s right to choose the law of the nation. Unable to overturn that decision, republicans have opted instead for harassment as a means of ending a woman’s right to make choices regarding her own life, future and health.

Walsh, the great moralist, who uses the right wing radio station as a propaganda tool to deflect criticism regarding allegations he failed to pay child support, regularly and vehemently defends policies and cultures of misogyny. Though he claims to be pro-life, his penchant for the cowardly conceal carry initiative essentially mandates a death sentence for petty crime, and places all of us in far more danger. Those who demand the “right” to carry a weapon everywhere are in the opinion of this writer, clinically afraid of their own doughy shadow.

But Walsh took issue with Taylor’s statement’s condemning the tantrum by senate President Ellis. Walsh did not take issue with a grown State Senator throwing a tantrum, however. Taylor told Ed Shultz that. ”Anti-women legislation has been their priority. Not creating jobs. We were silenced that day. The president broke his gavel. The women in the assembly were escorted out.” She went onto say that the current legislation, “…is no different than what I experienced when I went to Turkey and heard of what the women in the Middle East are experiencing with the Taliban, trying to silence them for being at the table.”

Walsh was unhinged, or at least played the masterful part of the pretend unhinged, like any theatrical lawyer. Playing to the lowest common denominator nightly to his lowest common denominator audience, Walsh bitched that he was “Sick and tired of (Democrat’s) war on women claims. I’m not going to stand for it anymore!” In a frothing rant that was about as fact based and coherent as the dad on “The Family Guy” cartoon, Walsh went on to accuse senator Taylor of insulting Muslim women with the Taliban comparison.

Truly heartfelt words from the man who appeared to have called The Council on American Islamic Relations terrorists in the preceding segment. And Walsh is well known for his empathy for both Muslims and women alike. His latest perversity on the issues facing our nation is to organize a small number of reprobates in his continuing pornography of gun proliferation he’s dubbed freedom fighters. Our bellicose friend here is keen on the prodigious misuse of the word “liberty,” which apparently only refers to Christian White women who self-police themselves into their husband’s cultural and selectively moralistic constraints.

But why should any of us care why an ideological wanker like Walsh even exists? He is a panderer on the super highway of base emotion and ignorant self-interest. But where the danger lies in “men” like Walsh is that they legitimize hate. For such men, their railing against so-called political correctness, is what the rest of us call manners and culture. I don’t walk into a room full of women and say, “What’s up…?” with some derogatory refrain about women, not because of political correctness, but out of politeness and respect.

I am told again and again by friends on the Right that the Reactionary pieces sound bitter. No, they are meant to strike at the heart of the reactionary in question. This is not the lawyerly sparring of an issue. I am not like so many in the mainstream media with limited issues to speak on. There isn’t enough time in 10 lifetimes for all the topics I want to explore, issues to follow, injustice to battle or stories to tell.

We aim to get at the heart of the matter, which was a challenge for this particular piece. Search and search was we might, Brian and I will be damned that Walsh doesn’t actually appear to have one.
