Quigley and the TPP: Towing the party line.

It was a simple request. Revolution and Beer and Q4 radio in Chicago simply wanted clarification from candidates in Illinois’ 5th congressional district about the upcoming vote on the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement, or TPP. The Obama administration, in a political slight of hand decided against putting the issue to a vote in congress before the mid-term elections in November. Democrats have also avoided any public debate on the issue. That should give voters pause.

The delay, presumably, is to protect democrat candidates facing challenges in their home districts. But critical issues cannot be left to political expediency and competition between the two major political parties. There are just too many important issues facing the nation that cannot be left to the folly of party politics. But democrats and republicans alike seem to be hiding details of the TPP, which still remain secret, despite a number of leaks, from the American people.

One of those contentious races is in the 5th Illinois district. Entrenched democrat incumbent Mike Quigley is facing a renewed challenge from Nancy Wade, a Green Party candidate focusing on reforms. The 5th district is reflective of the political mood in the nation. While constituents run the gamut from Left to Right, the district regularly skews strongly to the Left and progressive side in elections, due to a strongly middle class sentiment imbued by a strong sense of patriotism. Republicans have not fared well in the district, which runs from the near north side of the city west to the suburbs, including Elmhurst and Oakbrook. In the last election the Republican Party only fielded a token candidate.

There are indications that the democrats hold on the district, which was once represented by Rahm Emanuel, may be slipping as well. The reason is a perception that the party has taken its constituents for granted. TPP is a critical case in point. Quigley, who helped stoke tensions in Ukraine over oil and gas concerns, appears to be dutifully supporting policies to the detriment of Ukraine, and a sizable Ukrainian constituency in the 5th, in a backdoor scheme by the administration to sneak passage of the XL Keystone pipeline. That vote has also been delayed until the November elections.

Simply, the questions reflected discussions we had on our radio show, with voters and with activists, such as, does Representative Quigley opposed to in favor of the TPP? What reasons would he have, given the amount of information concerning to his constituents on this issue? Given the amount of time it has been in the public discourse, what is his reason for not holding a position on TPP? In that case, when would he expect to communicate a position to his constituents? What are Rep. Quigley’s positions or position regarding fast track on the vote? Does he have a personal position on any specific aspect or issue regarding fast track or TPP? What are his thoughts, concerns with how TPP might affect positively or negatively other regional or global trade agreements? Are there concerns regarding the agreement for oversight, loss of jobs, economic impact, US sovereignty issues or trade imbalances that might be created? What steps, positions and actions is the Congressman prepared take to satisfy genuine concerns over those issues by his constituents?

It has been nearly 3 months and not a word from Quigley’s office. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that he follows the party line, rather than the interests and wishes of his constituents. That might explain why district offices are located in the city, well out of reach of all of his suburban constituents, and why the congressman is nearly impossible to reach in person. That seems to be going around in Washington these days, on both sides of the aisle, and it has cost some notable politician’s their jobs. That is called voting, by the way, a handy little tool for replacing politicians who show a greater interest in their party than in their constituents.

Voters, you have choices. No one and no party should take you for granted. That indicates arrogance, and sets them up to believe that they know better than you. They do not, and when they refuse to respond about serious and critical issues to our nation and our families, it is an indication they have exhausted their usefulness.

Immigrants and their Ebola will kill all god-fearing Americans! Are you $%#@ing kidding me? A new rant from the FILTHY PUNDIT(He ought to have his mouth washed out) Politics, way over the %$#@ing top!……………….. Immigrants???!!! We are all seriously fucked now. I just turned on FOX news are some talking asshole named Chris Wallace, the suck dick for a job son of Mike Wallace from CBS and 60 minutes did an alarming piece on Ebola, formerly an African disease that turns your insides to a bloody froth before you shit yourself to death. He dove right in an all but connected it with the immigrant kids invading our southern border. Holy shit! Are those kids about to wipe out white fucking America with Ebola bombs. We’re fucked! Our race is fucked!. Too many brown goddamned immigrants, and every one of them leaving their families, swimming through shark infested waters, travelling 3000 fucking miles without shoes and fucking food to trudge across a desert where they could be killed or die a hundred awful fucking ways just to collect Obama’s $900 a month welfare windfall. Brilliant!… How does Chris Wallace wake up in the morning and, how does his dad not blow his fucking smug brat of a piece of shit of a son away for his smiling rape of true journalism? Here’s the deal, and you are thinking all of this too, so shut the fuck up! Immigrants are a pain in the ass. In my neighborhood a lot of them were African goatherders in the desert last week and this week they’re driving a taxi in a major fucking metropolitan area, or the middle easterners drive like they’re still back in fucking Kashmir or Karachi or fucking Bagdad. Ask my wife about the rude as shit Polish, Indian and Bulgarian bitches she has to deal with. All these goddamned foreigners! They’re like that new motherfucker in the office, and you have to show the asshole everything, cuz he’s fucking new (like that should be an excuse) and you fucking don’t have time for that shit. Pick it up on your own or get the fuck out, and you’re shocked when he fucks something up. And you fucking hate that foreign asshole because he comes in spouting all that hate bullshit at lunch about the old country and the war he just survived. Don’t bring your war and hate over here, right, because we’ve got our own hate, all we can handle here, and we fucking don’t need layers of shit. The one dimensional race hate, or those uppity fags trying to get “rights” to love who they want (Selfish fucks!) or the trannies and don’t forget about the women is enough for us! And we don’t need those Muslims over here with their religion of fucking hate and terriorism. We’ve already got that, it’s called corporatized fucking Christianity. Holy shit, we’ve got enough fucking hate to go around. Fuck, we hate each other, other white people and even our fucking selves. And if there is one thing the brown immigrants are going to upset is the magical fucking existence and all the good things us white people are doing to the planet, like global fucking warming, wars for fucking oil, telling women what they can do with their bodies and fucking over blacks and telling them it’s they’re fucking fault, and telling poor people in Detroit who can’t get water to go fuck themselves. And what about our kids? If we take in all these little fucking brown rats, wet backs and taco eaters, how are we going to justify cutting food stamps while paying rich motherfuckers more and more so they can face fuck us and call it a buffet? Top notch, that we give corporations $3 trillion in government subsidies so we can spend another $10 trillion for the cheap shit they shovel at us, but we can’t spend a couple of billion on children and the poor? No, we have to think of the American kids we’re fucking, instead of adding more foreign kids to fuck as well. Besides, we’ve got a proper system of exploitation by American corporations to fuck them in their own country, or to start wars in their homeland and then walk away saying they have to solve those problems on their own. After all, we are not the worlds policemen, which I agree wholeheartedly with by the way. We were once that shining city on a hill, and the sometimes world policeman, but that required that we gave a fuck about something other than sucking our own dick. Now we are the world’s vandal, the ambassadors of shitty plastic culture and corporate bullies. Hell, we might as well tear down that cunt on Staten Island with that bullshit “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” written by some bitch named Emma Lazarus. Sounds fucking communist anyway, and where the fuck was she from? Lazarus? Sounds fucking Jewish or Russian or whatever. Don’t recall those words also read with a visa, if you are white and with three forms of approved ID, or whatever the white or the dumb selfish ignorant motherfuckers this country now produces decides. I thought the words were pretty fucking clear and simple. Should be the “Statue of us against all the scum of the world.” Fuck liberty. Freedom is a bullshit lie if it excludes a single fucking soul in the whole goddamned universe! Tear that bitch down and put up a giant middle finger to truly reflect the values of this new America: FUCK YOU WORLD!

So Long Dinosaur Talk Radio. Long Live New Media!

This is a public proclamation: Political Talk Radio is dead. Good riddance! Strangely for an industry that prides itself on being the absolute forefront of information, and whose personalities regularly eschew so-called low information voters, it couldn’t be convinced of that fact despite that it is literally beating them over the head. By the way, it is beating them over the head. And I don’t say this lightly.

As the manager of a small and new low power AM start up in Chicago, and a current and former host with a sublime gift of B.S. my driving inspiration is not only to entertain and inform, but cut through the clutter of everything else packing the airwaves. The key there is innovation, and I am astounded as we emerge more and more into the market at the fundamental disdain for innovation in this industry. More than that, I am stunned at the absolute disregard and ignorance by programmers of a rapidly changing radio audience. Strangely, this is exactly where the industry began.

And this is where I began with talk radio, decades ago. I grew up on “Super CFL” and John “Records” Landecker’s “Boogie Checks” on WLS. By the Late 1970s I was hooked on Steve Dahl with “Disco Demolition” on FM radio in Chicago, and followed him and sidekick Garry Meir over to WLS again. The hook was a mix of Dahl’s radio soap opera home life and an irreverent take on the news of the day. By the 1980s I discovered a ranting but even keeled Bob Lassiter(copied unabashedly to the hilt by Michael Savage). I even found amusement in newcomer Rush Limbaugh’s anti-establishment “America held hostage,” shtick after the election of Bill Clinton, not yet aware of the political and ideological manufacturing of his emerging brand. Despite his nakedly conservative slant there still seemed balance to talk radio with hosts like Jay Marvin. Balance was quickly forced from the radio lexicon, and even Rush Limbaugh could hardly escape the irony that it was his pretend radio nemesis, Bill Clinton, who was instrumental in turning nearly all of broadcast radio into a propaganda tool for corporate messaging paraded as political discourse.

And so radio devolved from a true public medium into something fundamentally antithetical to real public interest. Worse, it abandoned real entertainment. But this is more about format than content. Content will follow one of two paths; it will be driven in a propagandistic way by entities who wish to manipulate the audience or the audience will support and drive content in a truly empowered consumer market. In a nation that remains politically moderate, socially liberal and financially conservative we have seen an industry move to message decidedly to the Right, so obviously offering true balance and debate has not been an industry standard. The collapse of talk radio’s audience amid a rise of internet radio and social media indicates that traditional grid-like formats is a thing of the past. That programmers and advertisers demand breaks at the :20 and :40 with a yammering talk host filling the entire content is chasing away key demographics.

I had this conversation with my retired neighbor the other day, explaining how audiences are changing. She isn’t comfortable with listening to radio on her phone or computer and prefers the radio. All of my younger activist friends listen exclusively on their iphones, tablets and smartphones. AM radio? And they may listen live, or grab the file/podcast to list or share later. They want texture, energy and something that holds their shorter attention span. My neighbor, who will likely not rush out or await to purchase the newest phone or smartpad, represents the audience talk radio is currently locked to. The audience of tomorrow is tuning out, losing interest and going elsewhere.

A fair amount of that has to do with politics. People over 50 tend to vote in higher numbers. When it is all about the politics, this demographic produces results as in votes. They will sit through hours of Limbaugh or Hannity or Beck, younger audiences, the ones that advertisers covet, will not. I can already hear the shouts and disagreements, but those are the dying cries of an industry trapped by convention. Advertisers pay the bills, right? Especially those of you on the Right or corporate side, suddenly it isn’t about the marketplace? Hmm.

The new audience wants texture, music, movement, a 3 or 5 minute segment with a personality on an issue, and 15 or 20 minutes for a great interview. In short they want a show, which is not what they are getting from blah-blah-blah talk radio currently.

The radio audience of tomorrow is already here, though almost nobody in the industry is listening to them. I have already worked out a sketch of what that landscape will look like. We’ve already begun crafting and instituting it at que4 radio in Chicago. It will revolutionize the industry and remake stations that are willing to evolve to the realities of a marketplace that is changing fundamentally. For those who don’t, we’ll look for your bones in the natural history museum beside the other dinosaurs!

Syria: The Left has lost its way(The right never knew the way)

Marketing. Modern activism has become the victim of the same obtuse and hysterical marketing that has plagued the rest of our culture, particularly our friends on the right. The looming debacle over the Syrian civil war is a sublime case in point. I am stunned by a loss of idealism and integrity by many on the left. Not for their opposition to the possibility of war or a limited attack against Syria’s Assad regime, advertised as an effort to degrade his ability to launch Chemical attacks on his own civilians, but by the chicken crap reasons the Left eschews action in Syria.

From Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fl.) to Ed Schultz there is this refrain about angering Assad, or the fear that he might hit us back. Not sure that many police officers have the luxury of refusing to answer calls because a perp might lash out. If you get into a fight, you are in the fight to win, even if winning is letting some would-be bully, like Assad, that every time he gets out of line, or crosses a line, he knows that someone bigger and meaner will give him a bust in the chops. If that bigger and meaner guy is acting to protect someone smaller and weaker, what could be a nobler cause? If you know someone is beating his children and you do nothing, and cop the attitude that it is their fight, and why should I get involved, well, that says more about you than about the abuser.

And that may be the most dangerous revelation of all of this, that we are not afraid of principles, only to stand for them. We are afraid of the fight, the just and righteous fight. That betrays to the world a dreadful lack of resolve, courage and confidence.

The left is also pushing a panic narrative describing how there is controversy over who fired the latest chemical weapon that killed scores of Syrian civilians. There is no serious debate that Assad was responsible. First and foremost, the Assad regime has not denied using them. Citing the Alternative media only goes so far. So-called Alternative media, where one could also find stories about an SAS hit squad offing Lady Diana, Black seeds can cure anything, the ongoing prediction of imminent American collapse(Always two years away), something insipid from Glenn Beck, Aliens living among us and Russian pictures of a soul leaving a body, has its own issues with accuracy and reality. Anything in the Alternative media, like the corporate and status quo media should come with heaping scoops of skepticism.

And what happened to my fellow Lefties who long cried and advocated for a world without borders? Suddenly those same Lefties have retreated to a defense of stateism, and retreated from the ideals of going to the aid of our fellow human being? Where are my lefty pals who dreamed of one world and a brotherhood of all people? Their argument that this isn’t our fight, that it is a religious fight, a civil war, or that we need to worry about “our” people first would seem to support FOX News’ refrain that this is indeed a Center Right nation, and not at all a Progressive nation. It would seem to affirm that we do indeed have more in favor of the Ron and Rand Paul’s, and the Ayn Randian morality of self-centered culture, and that all the blathering by Progressives and Liberals the last couple of decades is as ideological and substantive as choosing up sides for a high school field hockey game.

Last is this fiction of Al Qa’eda in Syria. Certainly they are there. They are proving themselves in those small numbers as willing to stand and sacrifice for their ideals and are winning the hearts and minds of victimized and lost Syrians. We are not. Al Qa’eda, despite the hysteria over Benghazi was on the wane. They are capitalizing on this tragedy to our detriment as we cower and withdraw from the world, except where it will make us money. Again, “in our interest,” long the argument of the Right is now the chorus of the Left. But Al Qa’eda is more benefitting from pro-Assad propagandists, and the US has been tricked into their inflated presence and the fear of that terror collective. Shame on us.

Skepticism in all things is healthy, and there is ample history to support being ultimately skeptical of this government. They have not served us well, and they undermine our national credibility by acting purely on money-driven interests. But the debate should be to find the truth as a means of making decisions on doing the right thing, not in doing what benefits our protected and insulated corner of the planet. We should be the big mean guy with the big heart that is that shining city on the hill, who is that last best hope for mankind. The right won’t do it, and the Left is losing it. Find your selves again, my Leftist friends, and I pray you find yourself Progressive and not reactionary.
