Does God Hate Breakfast?

I’m having some trouble with the Bible. If it truly is the word of God, why does he leave so many of the most important lessons in life out? For example, my dad is one of the toughest and bravest guys I know. He was a union guy, in a factory and a volunteer fireman, but he couldn’t accomplish anything without a cup of coffee in the morning. But nowhere in the Bible is there a story that starts with, “After his morning coffee the lord went forth and smote…”

For that matter, my whole life I have been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and yet, the Bible, Torah and Koran are all silent on this subject. Why? Wouldn’t it be a great lesson to kids if David’s mom was heard to say, “Goliath can wait until you’ve had breakfast. How are you going to slay a giant and you haven’t had breakfast? Oh, and don’t forget your helmet and knee pads!”michael-crawford-david-and-goliath-and-david-s-personal-trainer-rolf-new-yorker-cartoon

Then again, David would have also benefitted from exercise, right? Maybe a few pushups, jog a little, lift some heavy stones. Yet, he isn’t even described as practicing the slingshot. That seems fundamental. There is more to learn from the golfing scene from the 1970s comedy Animal House with John Belushi regarding practice than in any holy book. but exercise should be a given, right? Jesus walked the desert for who knows how long, but no where does it say to the rest of us, get your big butts up and go for a walk. The only downside I can see is that with all those healthy hot looking people in Mosques, Temples and churches, singles bars and e-harmony might go out of business. To quote Jim Gaffigan, as you turn to an attractive neighbor in church, “Peace be with you, and an extra piece for you…”

The commandments fall short as well. Unless I’m a peasant shepherd, a few of them just are sort of irrelevant. A few suggestions, if I might, would update the commandments, such as, Don’t fart in a crowded elevator, hilarious though it may be if you are the farter, not the fartee. How about, Thou’t shall not flip other drivers off, or drive like a jerk when entering and leaving a place of worship. That’s right, gold Toyota, you know who you are. Maybe not playing with food would be a good one for kids. I got smacked and grounded for that all the time, and yet never needed the Thou shall’t not kill rule.

Finally, we are warned of deviant sexual acts by clergy and throughout holy texts (insert your own jokes here). Marriage, we are also told, is sacred, and yet not much in the way of real world marriage advice. The idea that a woman shall be subservient to her husband has caused us nothing but trouble, while real world advice is missing. After 900 years of marriage -that’s how old they say Noah was in the Bible- I’m guessing relations between he and Mrs. Noah(No last name here? That seems a bit presumptuous. I have like 8 friends named Bill) were getting a bit, shall we say, predictable. Perhaps a bit of advice on how to liven up the captain’s quarters aboard the Ark a bit would have been in order. The first real Love Boat! I’m thinking a bit of role playing perhaps. I can hear Noah’s wife saying, “I’ll be the milk maiden tonight, and you be the lost shepherds boy…”

Along those lines, and I’m just throwing this one out there, you can all decide for yourselves, but isn’t S & M truly the consensual adult embodiment of the Golden Rule? Do onto others, and all that? Just sayin’…

Shaming Jesus

We hear all the time from the right how they speak for Jesus when again and again it becomes a do as I say not as I do scenario. At some point you must ask yourself if they are simply invoking the name to keep you under control, that is, shaming you into compliance with crafted and concealed deals and policies, cloaked in religion that are meant simply to provide a few with greater power, privilege and security at the expense of the rest of us. The refugee catastrophe, which Revolution and Beer has chronicled and followed for several years now, is a case in terribly stark and tragic point.

The crisis now in Europe’s heart reached a current peak this week when Hungary closed its border to tens of thousands of refugees(Migrants is an insult to the desperate plight of these people) were driven back with truncheons, water cannons and tear gas as they tried to cross the border. Note, that none of these people have food, water or shelter or any understanding of how they and their families will survive day to day. Hungary was refused barbed-wire by a German anti-capitalist company-Sarcasm Alert here.

Interestingly Serbia, not known over the last two decades for a particular love of Muslims was gloriously receptive and merciful to these poor people. Many thousands flooded across the border into neighboring Croatia where there was an outpouring of support, love and help from average people. In talking with people from the Balkans, many of whom survived the cascade of wars in the breakup of the former Yugoslavia it seems the crisis awakened memories for Croats and Serbs of their own nation’s recent struggles. Where religion once seemed to define untold horrific and barbaric acts there is now a common humanity and the understanding of the necessity, the moral imperative to help someone in need.

Renata Ivosh, mother and grandmother, survivor of the siege of Sarajevo and a refugee from Bosnia went with her daughter to the train station in Zagreb with cookies and juice for Syrian refugees. The family, living in a tiny basement apartment makes less than $10,000 a year for a family of 4. A farmer who survived the destruction of Vukovar in 1991 hoped his farm to hundreds of passing refugees, feeding and sheltering them. Contrast that to former Illinois Representative Joe Walsh, with a net worth estimated at well over a million dollars decried on his radio show that there is no money to help even a few thousand refugees headed to this nation of nearly 400 million. He rebuked the Pope’s suggestions that catholic parishes open their doors, saying it is what Jesus would do. Last week Walsh actually said that in that case “Jesus was wrong!”

So the question is, is it the words or the deeds? Who claims to speak for Jesus and who is actually doing the work he described in help the least of his brethren? The answer may shock you. The answer speaks directly to much of the ills our nation faces. The answer might empower you more than you ever thought possible, to the detriment of frauds and used car salesmen like Walsh, Trump and Hillary.

Talked with a Fundamentalist Christian who said he knows the world is 6000 years old according to all the people shown in the Bible. I told him is was maybe 90 years tops for all the people shown in the phonebook.

Smear: The Right attacks Reza Aslan

This is my standard; convicted war criminal and one of the architects against the genocide of Muslims in Bosnia, Radovan Karadzic, never publically gave an explicit order to eradicate Muslims civilians, to rape, loot or drive people from their homes. He gave his tacit approval by his silence, by the inflammatory and hate-filled rhetoric, and then defended it through carefully constructed language. Karadzic was guilty of his crimes.

Standing on frontlines, held at frontline checkpoints by armed paramilitaries, in towns and villages where hundreds had been executed, and talking with snipers who regularly took victims on Sarajevo streets, those Serbs were active on silent but explicit orders. The assault on human rights and dignity has not ended, nor do I reasonably expect it to disappear in my lifetime, but I stand against selective dignity and selective rights, and efforts to trick and cajole communities, or a part of a community into the compliant corner of ignorance and hate. It is why I am adamantly in opposition to so-called men-culture thieves-like Glenn Beck. I have seen his kind before.

Yet I am constantly astounded by the blind supplication by an audience to Beck. I would expect some audience, mirroring the demographic of sociopaths inherent in the general population. But men like Beck are allowed legitimacy, this for a shameless self-promoter who perennially predicts upheavals, catastrophes and calamities that never come. It’s like those pious semi-cult leaders who proclaim the rapture and decry a date, only to have it pass as just another day. Take his latest Mosquito coast garbage today, which would be laughable if Beck didn’t enjoy a poisoned audience of animated fools, bigots and shut-ins.

Earlier this week Beck reacted to the new book by Reza Aslan, the author of “Zealot,” an attempt to look more humanly at the life of Jesus in the context of his time. The video of Aslan embarrassing a FOX News host regarding the book went viral on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt1cOnNrY5s Beck seemed to have backed off the attitude that Aslan needs to shut up, but my take on his words this week describe another direction of attack simply to discredit a man who got over on a Rightwing tool on FOX. His costume outrage on today’s show had the feeling of a smear as he attempted very pointedly to discredit Aslan.

Never once did Beck talk about the substance of the book. Instead he went off into a paranoiac lather about a vast conspiracy involving thousands including Aslan, Media Matters, George Soros, the Tides Foundation and Iranians.

“Somebody else is pouring money into him(Aslan),” Beck said on his radio show today. “The Levantine Culture Center partners with Code Pink…They’re extreme Leftists.”

“Fine,” said a magnanimous Beck, “he can write about Jesus. I would just like Christians to write about Islam without being killed.”

First, when did even Christians come to OWN Jesus? Islam views him as a prophet, and last I checked, Jesus lived and died a Jew. So I think that means he is significant to all three. Second, his co-host, one of several yes men to stroke Beck when he requires it, said that Christians don’t write books about Islam, that about a quarter hour into hour two of the show. Which is really odd, since I found a great many openly and unabashedly anti-Islam books just in the first half dozen pages on Amazon, such as Islamophobe Robert Spencer’s “The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).”

Beck finished coughing out his media hairball by bantering about tweets by Aslan, which sounded to me to show frustration at being harassed. It is well-known how the Right annoys and harasses targets and dissenters to their hate cabal. Now, I am not saying that Beck set up Alsan as part of the effort to discredit him, or to attempt to add substance to his diarrheal attempt at structure, but it certainly has been a tactic on the right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIeByOeERpY, not convinced? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI0jY_SHGXA, or Tea Party shills yelling “Glenn Beck.” How about this goon for Gun Prnographers and the Right, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gculWPlYwW4? Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzDLGk0tvas, or, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOpIdgl5bHI.

We’ll have more on Beck and others speaking irresponsibly or maliciously as a means to coarsen the culture or to eliminate opportunity for those not defined or oppressed by the status quo. We will continue to fight against anti-Islam hate speech, unjust statements and attitudes towards immigrants and the attempt to legitimize racism. It’s a big fight, and as always we welcome a debate with Beck on any topic of his choosing, and we’ll do our best to get this piece into his stained fingers. Doubtless he’ll prove his penchant for cheap shots and cowardice, but we’ll see.
