Columbus, the genocidal murdering sailor? Happy Columbus Day everybody!

The one thing about history is that it must be view in context. There is a real danger in view history through contemporary perspectives, particularly for political or religious advantage. Both the Left and Right are guilty of that. Which is not to negate a critical accounting of history. It is important to learn lessons from history, but the true imperative of history is to learn all history, from as many perspectives on all sides. There is the age-old adage, history is written by the victors; a phrase which must rank among the most immoral and most regressive statements ever uttered. Such are the words of criminals and the ignorant. History must be the choral narrative of humanity, not an egotistical soap opera for the 1%, royalty and the powerful, or a scorecard in a dead-end tit-for-tat grudge match between religions. Fundamentally, it is the same reason that we judge the mistakes of children differently than those of adults.

Both the Left and Right will attempt to score points with truly meaningless hyperbole regarding Columbus and Columbus Day. As with most issues used as political and ideological footballs, the truth lies solidly in the middle. Real history becomes irrelevant here, because both sides have either abandoned it, do not know history, or are completely partisan in their positions that both truth and history or compromise are hardly a consideration.

So, was Christopher Columbus responsible for all that came after his arrival in the so-called “New” world? For one, it wasn’t new, as people had already been here for the better part of 25 thousand years. So, ole Chris didn’t discover anything, any more than I discovered the central Texas town of Saledo near where my parents live when I drove through it some years back. Following that logic I might have declared little Saledo, with its tourist shops and Inn where General George Custer stopped once, mine, or that I claimed it in the name of then Chicago Mayor Daley. So Columbus did not discover America, he stumbled upon a place someone already lived on and, if possession is 9/10 of the law, owned.

So what is Columbus guilty of? Personally, nothing. His largely innocent but failed efforts to uncover new supply routes to Asia did commence an occupation by Europeans over the coming centuries resulting over the course of 4 centuries somewhere between 33 million and 145 million indigenous deaths.

What is true is that that invasion and occupation, cloaked innocuously with terms like colonization led to an absolute destruction of the aboriginal peoples of the Americas. The assault and degradation and outright slaughter of those people was in fact a multi-generational genocide. In a proper perspective of history, and a proper accounting of the human soul, that must be accounted for and come to honestly, not racially as it has been done as a means of obscuring European crimes and ignorance.

That is hardly to accuse or impugn all Europeans, or all Americans today, or in the past. We are at the culmination of a history in which there are indeed a grand majority of innocent European and Western colonists. While the momentum of that colonization ground aboriginals under hoof and boot, the history cannot not be undone without doing greater harm. So where does that leave us?

History instead becomes a tool to establish standards for human rights and human dignity. The imperative is to progress from the past, and past ignorance, and not to continuously recreate crimes from that past, nor to continually reopen or re-enflame the scars and pain evoked from those crimes. And certainly now to create a revolving scheme of oppressors who exact revenge as they come to power. That is the risk of exalting the victim too much, ignoring their inherent humanness as well.

And then is where the consideration for not celebrating a fake holiday like Columbus day. At the very least we are celebrating a myth and a cartoonish and bigoted view of history, which we all should have learned from. We wouldn’t celebrate Robert E. Lee’s birthday nationally. Even though he didn’t start the KKK, and disavowed the Confederate flag under which he fought, he did nurture men like Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest, the first Grand Wizard of the Klan. We wouldn’t celebrate that day out of respect for the pain and insult it would cause Blacks in this country.

The point here is that history is a process, forged as much by blunders and success as a continual ascension from the ignorance we harbored the moment before. The choices and steps we make now will resonate. In truth, future history is yet to be written. We are all the authors of that history, and so inherent is a guarantee of chaos and calamity. It is the weight of those who side with human dignity and human rights through the greatest driver of human history-mutual respect and understanding.

So, if you’re passionate about Columbus, take the wife out to dinner, have a couple of Morettis, but realize that others, many with generational lines in this country extending many thousands of years before Columbus was born are sensitive about it. Realize that only a hand full of generations ago happened the Trail of Tears, Wounded Knee, and that throughout most of the 20th Century open racism against Native Americans was rampant and overt. Realize that those same struggles continue now as the sovereignty of indigenous peoples re routinely violated, and that promises and treaties are likewise violated with impunity. Columbus wasn’t an evil person, nor was he a hero. He is a myth, but history has inflated his legacy far beyond the person, and that is what needs to be remembered.

America’s Slide Towards Genocide: A Place of Refuge

I am declaring my home a refuge should the hate-mongers and bigots in this country threaten my Muslim friends and neighbors.

The day after September 11th 2001, I went over to a Mosque on the northwest side of Chicago and met with an Imam and several other members of the Mosque. After witnessing the genocide in Bosnia and Rwanda, and learning how a society descends into acts of genocide I was concerned for my Muslim friends and neighbors. To them, for fear of what this country might do to a minority, I offered my home as a sanctuary, vowing to give my life to protect and defend my neighbors. Never again and not in my name meant, and still means something to me.

I was to learn that an event like September 11th, in a nation without any real understanding of Islam would not undertake a serious pogrom. It was bittersweet when only a hand full of incidents occurred. Most people ignored the chicken-little hate-mongering against Muslims by FOX news and the Rightwing media. There were no internment camps during the criminal war in Iraq for Muslims as this country employed for Japanese citizens and immigrants during the Second World War. By the way, ask yourself why there were no such camps for white German Americans? But the media-fed bigotry descends upon the soul like a fog, eventually settling deep.

Genocide is a process. It needs a fertile soil; and base to grow from. That soil has been cultivated since September 11th. The idea of radical and extremist Islam has been constructed, feeding a self-fulfilling prophecy in ISIS, as this country has created an enemy as a means of legitimacy and control. Hard to believe? You now routinely surrender your constitutional rights for the illusion of protection and security. You accept banality and snarkiness as journalism. The government has more control in your lives thanks to the patriot act and the war on terror. It scrutinizes your emails and conversations and fondles you at airports. As long as your favorite shows are on cable TV and the fast food place on the corner remains open and you can walk into Target with a gun, freedom prevails!

Radical Islam must exist for the war profiteers and their media salespersons. Obama says we could be at war with ISIS for years to come, at a million dollars a cruise missile, or $300 thousand for a laser guided bomb; But the video is awesome! The oligarchs and their subordinates in government, including Obama and Tea party and Republican and Libertarian cohorts as well, amass great fortunes over gas and oil. Western companies do business with ISIS-without a single head being cut off. Western nations purchase oil from ISIS. ISIS, like America is at war with the poor and the weak. See a pattern yet?

But genocide is more a social affliction than a political one. It runs away with a society properly primed by the politic and its media. So the media today is filled with plots against New York, a workplace beheading by a deranged individual in Oklahoma and ISIS threatening to attack the American mainland. we have been fed the crime in the beheadings of Americans in stylish videos. next comes the investment of threatened terror at home. The third component will be an American shot down over ISIS territory. The hysteria of the media will increase to a din. They are on the verge. I saw it in ex-Yugoslavia, and I still have copies of the lists and reasons the Hutus in Rwanda read over the radio calling Tutsis cockroaches and detailing why they should be killed.

You think America is immune? We are more susceptible than any other culture on the planet, primarily because we believe we are better. And ISIS would lave for us to do something rash and terrible to our Muslim friends and neighbors to legitimize their brand and to solidify their power. The equation is simple if you are open to it.

That’s why as an American of conscience, who sees the world and people clearly for who and what they are, I am designating my home a sanctuary should this country transpire to some thing inhuman against Muslim friends and neighbors. God forbid that should happen, but if it does anyone threatening or violating this household and all who take refuge here would wish that ISIS was your only enemy.

ALERT! Press conference, rally Sunday to highlight global support for Gaza and US complicity in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians

(CHICAGO 08/09/2014) – On a day when President Barack Obama said that when the United States has the “unique capability to help avert a massacre,” of minorities in Iraq, we cannot “turn a blind eye,” the Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine condemns Mr. Obama’s blatant hypocrisy and calls on the US government to end all diplomatic, political and financial support of Israel.

Israel has been targeting civilians in Gaza since July 8 in a military onslaught the United Nations has warned may amount to war crimes. Israel has killed nearly 2,000 people, including more than 370 children, and wounded more than 9,000. Several Latin and South American countries have cut ties with Israel and a member of the British Cabinet resigned in protest over the UK’s stance on the massacre in Gaza. The Chicago Coalition says it is time for the United States to end its complicity in the death and destruction of the Palestinian people!

WHAT: Press conference and rally

WHERE: Southeast corner of Michigan and Congress
WHEN: 2:15 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10

WHO: Speakers will include lay representatives of several Latin American countries as well as interfaith peace activists.

The Chicago Coalition also encourages people to remember that even if a truce is reached and Israel’s attacks against Palestinians ends, the occupation and siege on Gaza are still in full force. The Coalition demands an immediate end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian people and an end to the siege on Gaza. Both contravene international law and deprive Palestinians of their human rights.

The rally will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be followed by a march to Federal Plaza.

Sunday’s protest is being convened by the Coalition for Justice in Palestine, whose members include American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Chicago Islamic Center, Islamic Community Center of Illinois, Mosque Foundation, Palestinian American Community Center, Palestinian American Council, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)-Chicago, and United States Palestinian Community Network (USPCN). Groups, including ANSWER Coalition, the Anti-War Committee-Chicago, the Arab Jewish Partnership for Peace and Justice in the Middle East, Jews for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and the Palestine Solidarity Group, are supporting the rally.

Revolution and Beer Unrestrained: Do not read if you are overly sensitive, easily offended or stupid. A no punches pulled commentary on the worst day since the Gaza genocide began ….. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… dear Liberals, Progressives, Anarchists, Socialists and anyone else astounded, horrified and enraged by today’s events in Gaza, if you think that Netanyahu and his neo-Nazi cabal of fucking genocidal scum give a fuck about your protests or die-ins you are sadly mistaken. If you think appeals for humanity, mercy and restraint will accomplish dick, the American media and government are fully aligned to cover their ass closer than a lifer to a short-eyes in a prison cell. (Look it up, it’s funny.) The reality is, the Israelis bombing the shit out of Gaza at the core think of the Palestinians as their own personal niggers, and when the niggers get uppity the plantation owners will bring the hammer down. Truth is what you want? Fuck you! You gave that shit away when you legitimized the democrats, paid any attention to the ass-clowns in the corporate media-including MSNBC- and every time you feel sorry for the race raping fucking bigots on the Right. 90% of that media is nothing more than the taint for parent corporations supplying the bombs and tech that is murdering Palestinians; two fucking thousand at this point! And the republicans, who suck the dick of that big business sell your religious idiocy back to you into this guilt-laden bible prophecy mind fuck control shit. It’s a sin to criticize Israel cuz then your a Jew hating heretic, and we all know Israel is the 51st fucking state of the United God-damned States of America. Hell, Israel dick suckers like Joe Walsh, Rush Limbaugh and Ted fucking Cruz have more loyalty to fucking Israel to the United States. Even with the haphazard, couldn’t hit a fucking barn Hamas rockets, life in Israel is better than it is here. They don’t have fucking homeless or poverty anything like we have here, because we supply billions to their genocidal fucking military, and because all their homeless and impoverished they keep penned up in the Gaza strip where they can use them as slave fucking niggers to shovel their shit or as target practice. Hey, their just fucking Muslims, and who gives a fuck about Muslims. Their rat fucking little kids are born just to kill Jews and be terrorists, so fuck them too. Right? An Israeli shell hit a school today, and then during what was supposed to be a ceasefire hammered a market killing 17 people buying fucking bread and goddamned humus, but all fucking Israel has to say is that Hamas had a slingshot or a condom full of piss to fling at Israeli tanks and jets and you’ll say, its Hamas’ fault, just like our dick sucking, stand for nothing, corporate whores in the government said today. No proof, just puppets with Netanyahu’s dick up their ass. Fuck Israel, fuck Obama and fuck this government for not actually standing on the rights of people but being fucking evil. And fuck them for making me use the word evil, because I hate that fucking word. Take a page from Evo Morales and declare the Israeli government a terrorist regime presiding over a genocide and hunt down those motherfuckers and throw them in the fucking Hague!!!…..Wow, that was cathartic!
