ISIS? Government’s Grammys?

Does ISIS really exist? I’ll get to that in a moment.

First, Brian Williams has taken a leave of absence in the wake is apparent embellishments on stories that really in the grand scheme of things mean nothing. If you’re unaware of what Williams said that got him in so much “trouble,” you’ve been under a rock. I’m not wasting precious pixels explaining it all over again. This is for the rest of us with a pulse that extends above the neck.

I don’t so much care about Williams. I live in a modern city with internet, books and libraries and not a town in Idaho or Alabama or even downstate Illinois in which dinosaur, corporatized, filtered and manufactured network news is really the only source for tens of millions of Americans. I am, instead concerned about anyone who was shocked by Williams’ personal lies. He and everyone on ABC, CBS, FOX, MSNBC and CNN lie to us everyday.

Those groups are as much about journalism and truth as the Grammys are about real music. Because we know that Beyonce or any of the other media marketing creations are producing the very best music out there today. Seriously? I can name a hundred artists in 2014 with more real talent, creativity and heart than the uber-manufactured and ultra-marketed Beyoncé. This really isn’t about Beyoncé, who I’m sure is a nice…well, never mind.

Williams is just the poster boy for a media and government that routinely parades the most audacious lies to us. Think weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. What about a media and government that still pretends there is a controversy over man-made climate change, or a media that never talks about TPP? How about teaching children in school that we are the greatest nation in the world, and then in a whispering alternative media they discover that America has political prisoners; 85 year old Catholic Nun Megan Rice, John Kiriakou, Jeremy Hammond, Chelsea Manning and many more imprisoned using statutes to stop the exposure of real crimes while the HSBC bank officials that hid $100 billion in a Swiss bank and funneled money to Al Qaeda received the financial equivalent of a parking ticket. Maybe, it’s a government and media telling us the stockmarket shows the economy is great, until you try to find a job, pay your bills, visit a doctor or sell your one bedroom condo.

This is the era of distrust of the media and government, especially on the Right. Or is it? Why is it everything that the government says is a lie, a manipulation, an act of propaganda, except when it comes to those crazy and evil Muslim terrorists? It is as if we can pride ourselves on our distrust of media and government lies, except when it comes to Islam. But there is proof, right? All those terrible videos. The beheadings and burnings, the gun camera videos on Youtube, with tags that read “30mm cannon makes mince meat out of terrorists.” ISIS is coming to a mall near you! The people who claim climate change is a hoax, and measles vaccines, virtually unchanged in 60 years and given to hundreds of millions since then, caused their kid to be autistic, despite irrefutable science, buy the marketing of the ISIS boogieman without question.

Does ISIS really exist, or exist the way it has been marketed through a partnership between a corporatized media messaging for mega-corps with tighter and tighter hegemony over the government? It makes for the ultimate reality television show, erasing the so-called theatrical 4th wall erasing the presumable barrier between audience and story. At least you might be considering the question now?

Maybe ISIS really is the evil scum of the earth bastards we must eradicate. If so, don’t tell me it may take decades and more than a trillion dollars to defeat this militia-sized rabble in the desert, when we fought 3 axis armies on 4 continents and across two vast oceans of more than 30 million fighters with modern technology in World War Two’s 5 years. Tell me that and I start to believe I’m being played. Maybe ISIS is real, and everything the corporate media tells us is the truth. And maybe the Grammys really are about Music and not marketing.

The Propaganda Game

The politics and Propaganda of Professor Stephen Cohen

It has been a year now since the Euromaidan protests helped bring down the government over corruption charges. Despite calls for unity, Ukraine quickly dissolved into a low level conflict with high level international stakes. Tragic as it may be, with (though likely under-reported) nearly 5400 deaths, according to the United Nations, that still makes Ukraine’s 45.5 million people far s safer than the United States with more than 17,000 homicides. By scale it certainly isn’t close to the nearly 200 thousand killed in Bosnia, 50,000 killed on all sides during the Kosovo conflict. In fact, it is nominally worse than the 1000 or so killed in the short-lived Russo-Georgian conflict of 2008-09. What Ukraine is, instead is a crime, a fact concealed deftly by propagandists such as the pro-Russian apologist Professor Stephen Cohen.

In my book, “A Tragic Fate: Politics, Oil, the crash of Malaysia Flight 17 and the Looming Threats to Civil Aviation,” (2015) I detail the superpower race for control of strategic oil and gas reserves, driven by short-sighted economic imperatives. In the United States and Russia, both government officials and their respective media concealed or misrepresented from the beginning the true nature of the Ukrainian crime. While the Right in this country is blinded jingoistic rhetoric and partisan disdain for Barack Obama, the Left has been fooled into assumptions of a Nazi-led government in Kiev, conspiracy tales around the downing of MH-17 in July, as well as historic and ethnic paradigms driving the conflict. Chief among those propagandists duping the Left is Princeton Professor Stephen Cohen.

Cohen is a contributor to the nation and virtually the only guest regarding Ukraine and Russia on the Thom Hartmann Show and Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now. This morning Chen brushed past the issue of US and Russian complicity in the Ukraine crisis over their mutual competition for oil and gas reserves, coincidentally located precisely where the fighting is occurring, and instead laid out the historical and ethnic argument for Russia’s intervention and interest in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. “A Tragic Fate,” shows that the historic and ethnic argument is in fact an excuse, a distraction to hide the real crime. Certainly, as an elite academic, Cohen, a frequent guest on RT (Russia Today), Moscow’s version of FOX, with ties to Russian President Putin, has at the very least access to the same sources sighted in “A Tragic Fate.”

The characterization of conflicts in Ethnic and historical false narratives contributed to the Nazi excuse for invading neighbors under the ruse of protecting ethnic Germans, or in reclaiming territory. It is a fundamental propaganda tool in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and characterizes ever genocide in history. In Bosnia and Kosovo propagandists on all sides frequently explained or excused war crimes in terms of historical and ethnic narratives. An often and all too lazy foreign press, particularly in the West, are all too happy to accept those narratives because, as I was told by a well-known local network journalist at the height of the Bosnian conflict, it fits with a simple good guy-bad guy story that is easy to report.

That laziness and ignorance is not as simple and innocent as it may seem. Behind the scenes propagandists connected to or loyal to the parties of a conflict, as well as a myriad of public and private voices with their own interests are vying for the public’s attention. The press, which in between the weekend weather report and what to shop for and where, slips in those carefully crafted headlines, selling you cartoonish good guy-bad guys stories. Ukraine is no different, and it seems that the Prof. Cohen is in the business of selling; it appears that the Leftwing media is buying. As for the Rightwing media, they just believe the world is one big tribal football game.

#JeSuisCharlie I Love Terrorists!

Today the Paris editors of Charlie Hebdo, the target of a brutal massacre last week by terrorists hiding behind the veil of Islam, will publish 3 million copies of the magazine. The cover will depict a cartoon image of the Prophet Muhammad. The day of the attack Revolution and Beer published their cartoon of Muhammad as a statement of support for the freedom of expression. In the face of that crime we felt it critical to editorially oppose the forces of censorship. We are and have been and will continue to be as critical of any person, organization, religion, ideology and system that assails or undermines the imperative necessity of fully and honestly critiquing anything that impedes human progress or contributes to the lack there of.

We also respect our Muslim friends and neighbors and feel it is regressive to add anything more that attempts to make any of this about religion. The Charlie Hebdo cartoon is, in that regard, unproductive in bringing people together so that the species may progress together, rather than in pockets. There is a subversive attempt to pit religions and peoples against one another, not for the benefit of those religions, but for the control of resources, power and control. The media is the selling point, rather like the slick used car salesman that sells you a lemon. We have chronicled that cynical and all too successful assault on civil liberties and the greater aggrandizement of the perversely wealthy.

Here is the image we wish would resonate for today and beyond:

heart2

One way to begin is to begin to understand each other’s humanity. Who starts that? My father always taught me about being the bigger person. He also taught me not to be a jerk. I’m trying. We also need to understand the media manipulation that makes one life more important than another. There was virtually no media coverage of the funerals of Tamir Rice, Michael Brown or Eric Garner, but hour by hour coverage of two slain NYPD officers. There were regular funeral updates and the names of the 4 Jewish victims of the Paris Kosher market but virtually nothing of 50 Muslim civilians killed over the weekend in a US airstrike. The message in all of those is clear; some lives are more important than others. That message never leads to peace, or to progress, but more of the same misery.

Who benefits and profits from that? Who capitalizes on the constant drumbeat of supposed Islamic extremism, of the rising Russian bear, of the hysterical panic to have more guns everywhere despite plummeting crime statistics long before gun proliferation laws took effect? Is it the poor, who cannot find decent jobs, or who must collect food stamps to supplement their low paying service and Chinese-junk choked Walmart job? Is it the middle class, still struggling, and failing as healthcare costs have been shifted more fully to them to the benefit of ever more profitable and predatory corporations? When do we begin to realize that Satan may have come in the form of those smiling and polished salesmen in the media, millionaires stoking our darker fears and those bigotries we once eschewed within ourselves. They seduce the society into surrendering their freedoms and soverienty for the rich and powerful. Are you better for it? Are we better for it as a nation? As a planet? When…?

Sean Hannity is a SnakeOil Salesman (Bakken that is)

snake-oil-salesman
Here we go with the carrot-dangling, smoke-blowing, shameless, self-righteous insults that get thrown at working-class people trying to stay employed like lit cigarette butts.

BREAKING NEWS!!! According to Sean Hannity, you unemployed folks out there would be gainfully employed; making between 70 and 100k a year, if you just moved to North Dakota.

Listen to Hannity’s big-tent solution.

As far as news reporting goes, I think this gentleman ought to get Hannity’s job:

Keystroke Lashing

And then there’s this lovely little reply to a request to connect from Job Bank head Kelly Blazek–ironically Cleveland’s “Communicator of the Year”:

“I love the sense of entitlement in your generation,” she wrote, then continued. “You’re welcome for your humility lesson for the year. Don’t ever reach out to senior practitioners again and assume their carefully curated list of connections is available to you, just because you want to build your network.”

And what did the “entitled” young lady do to deserve such a rotten keystroke lashing? She emailed Ms. Blazek asking to be added to her job board. Read the full story here.

I would like to add snakeoil salesman to Sean Hannity’s title. Also, I think Blazek just raised the bar on the definition of “rejection letter” quite drastically.

Revolution & Beer’s WC Turck Moderates Panel at “Shadows Of Liberty” Screening

WC Turck moderated a panel discussion after the free screening of the new and important film “Shadows of Liberty,” Tuesday night. The event was held in the historic and beautiful Lincoln Hall, at the Northwestern University School of Law. This very room has been the location for many of the most important events related to the telecommunications act and media regulation in the last decade. Joining the panel were filmmaker Jean-Philippe Tremblay; Dale Lehman, WZRD 88.3 FM News Director; Mitchell Szczepanczyk of Chicago Media Action; Nancy Wade, Green Party congressional candidate in Illinois’ 5th district; of Mike Kalas of Multikulti. Special thanks for Chicago Media Action for editing the video of the lively discussion that ensued.

Film Trailer:

ABOUT SHADOWS OF LIBERTY: Shadows of Liberty reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover‐ups and corporate control. Filmmaker Jean-Philippe Tremblay takes an intrepid journey through the darker corridors of the American media landscape, where global conglomerates call the shots. For decades, their overwhelming influence has distorted news journalism and compromised its values. In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone. Tracing the story of media manipulation through the years, Shadows of Liberty poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful corporations write the news?

FEATURING: Danny Glover, Julian Assange, Dan Rather, Amy Goodman, David Simon, Daniel Ellsberg, Norman Solomon, Dick Gregory, Roberta Baskin, Robert McChesney, John Nichols, Chris Hedges, Kristina Borjesson, and many more.

Smear: The Right attacks Reza Aslan

This is my standard; convicted war criminal and one of the architects against the genocide of Muslims in Bosnia, Radovan Karadzic, never publically gave an explicit order to eradicate Muslims civilians, to rape, loot or drive people from their homes. He gave his tacit approval by his silence, by the inflammatory and hate-filled rhetoric, and then defended it through carefully constructed language. Karadzic was guilty of his crimes.

Standing on frontlines, held at frontline checkpoints by armed paramilitaries, in towns and villages where hundreds had been executed, and talking with snipers who regularly took victims on Sarajevo streets, those Serbs were active on silent but explicit orders. The assault on human rights and dignity has not ended, nor do I reasonably expect it to disappear in my lifetime, but I stand against selective dignity and selective rights, and efforts to trick and cajole communities, or a part of a community into the compliant corner of ignorance and hate. It is why I am adamantly in opposition to so-called men-culture thieves-like Glenn Beck. I have seen his kind before.

Yet I am constantly astounded by the blind supplication by an audience to Beck. I would expect some audience, mirroring the demographic of sociopaths inherent in the general population. But men like Beck are allowed legitimacy, this for a shameless self-promoter who perennially predicts upheavals, catastrophes and calamities that never come. It’s like those pious semi-cult leaders who proclaim the rapture and decry a date, only to have it pass as just another day. Take his latest Mosquito coast garbage today, which would be laughable if Beck didn’t enjoy a poisoned audience of animated fools, bigots and shut-ins.

Earlier this week Beck reacted to the new book by Reza Aslan, the author of “Zealot,” an attempt to look more humanly at the life of Jesus in the context of his time. The video of Aslan embarrassing a FOX News host regarding the book went viral on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt1cOnNrY5s Beck seemed to have backed off the attitude that Aslan needs to shut up, but my take on his words this week describe another direction of attack simply to discredit a man who got over on a Rightwing tool on FOX. His costume outrage on today’s show had the feeling of a smear as he attempted very pointedly to discredit Aslan.

Never once did Beck talk about the substance of the book. Instead he went off into a paranoiac lather about a vast conspiracy involving thousands including Aslan, Media Matters, George Soros, the Tides Foundation and Iranians.

“Somebody else is pouring money into him(Aslan),” Beck said on his radio show today. “The Levantine Culture Center partners with Code Pink…They’re extreme Leftists.”

“Fine,” said a magnanimous Beck, “he can write about Jesus. I would just like Christians to write about Islam without being killed.”

First, when did even Christians come to OWN Jesus? Islam views him as a prophet, and last I checked, Jesus lived and died a Jew. So I think that means he is significant to all three. Second, his co-host, one of several yes men to stroke Beck when he requires it, said that Christians don’t write books about Islam, that about a quarter hour into hour two of the show. Which is really odd, since I found a great many openly and unabashedly anti-Islam books just in the first half dozen pages on Amazon, such as Islamophobe Robert Spencer’s “The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).”

Beck finished coughing out his media hairball by bantering about tweets by Aslan, which sounded to me to show frustration at being harassed. It is well-known how the Right annoys and harasses targets and dissenters to their hate cabal. Now, I am not saying that Beck set up Alsan as part of the effort to discredit him, or to attempt to add substance to his diarrheal attempt at structure, but it certainly has been a tactic on the right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIeByOeERpY, not convinced? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI0jY_SHGXA, or Tea Party shills yelling “Glenn Beck.” How about this goon for Gun Prnographers and the Right, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gculWPlYwW4? Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzDLGk0tvas, or, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOpIdgl5bHI.

We’ll have more on Beck and others speaking irresponsibly or maliciously as a means to coarsen the culture or to eliminate opportunity for those not defined or oppressed by the status quo. We will continue to fight against anti-Islam hate speech, unjust statements and attitudes towards immigrants and the attempt to legitimize racism. It’s a big fight, and as always we welcome a debate with Beck on any topic of his choosing, and we’ll do our best to get this piece into his stained fingers. Doubtless he’ll prove his penchant for cheap shots and cowardice, but we’ll see.
