Exclusive: Anita Alvarez on Que4 Radio

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez will hold a very exclusive press conference on Que4 Radio’s Revolution and Beer program Saturday at 11am. Alvarez, embattled over her handling of the Laquan McDonald case, which took more than a year before charges were filed in that case, reports that her office will file charges in a case her office reports will be groundbreaking, shocking and historic. We don’t know many details and have been asked not to report or speculate ahead of the announcement Saturday at 11am. What we do know is that the murder investigation spanned several continents and involved tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of investigators. Reports are that the victim was killed by a knife or knives, but details remain very sketchy right now. One unconfirmed report from Que4 Radio indicates a possible connection that includes the Cooking Channel. That is all we know. Ms. Alvarez and her office is keeping a very tight lid on this, and is deflecting inquiries with “No comment at this time,” or complete denial.

Families of Chicagoans Killed by Police to Demand Accountability at Police Headquarters

Nov. 5 protest to commemorate birthday of Rekia Boyd, an unarmed bystander killed by off duty CPD officer Dante Servin in 2012.

Chicago 11/3 — On Wednesday 11/5, families and loved ones of people who have lost their lives at the hands of Chicago Police will rally with supporters outside police headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan. Those speaking out will include Martinez Sutton, representing the family of Rekia Boyd, Cynthia Lane, the mother of Roshad McIntosh and Panzy Edwards, the mother of Dakota Bright.

Dante Servin, the off duty CPD officer who killed Rekia Boyd, is scheduled to be tried for shooting a civilian. The trial is set to begin on December 3rd. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless discharge of a firearm and reckless conduct.

The families of those killed by police say they want the officers who shot their loved ones to be held accountable. Cynthia Lane, speaking at a press conference about the officer who killed her son, said, “I don’t know age, nothing. I don’t know what he looks like. But, if it was the other way around and somebody had killed the police officer, their name, their age, their address, their nationality, everything, where they’re from, their whole history would have been on the news.”

Organizers of the demonstration say on the event’s facebook page that Rekia Boyd’s family needs support not only commemorate her life, but to bring attention to the often unrecognized violence against women at the hands of the police.

The event description states, “Though the crimes of police brutality and sexual violence against women of color have been committed systematically in Chicago and throughout the U.S., these stories remain unheard… Please join them to protest the ways in which the Chicago Police Department obstruct, rather than uphold, the rights of women of color to raise their children in safe and healthy environments without the constant threat of senseless violence.”

At the demonstration family members and loved ones of those killed by police, along with their supporters, will make the following demands:

1. We advocate for an end to all beatings, sexual abuse and torture of women of color by the police and demand an end to the impunity given to police officers for their crimes.

2. We demand that Dante Servin’s charges be raised from Manslaughter to 2nd Degree murder and that he be convicted in court.

3. We demand that the Chicago Police Department’s disproportionate use of deadly force against black residents be investigated by the State’s Attorney for Cook County, Illinois Anita Alvarez.

4. We demand an investigation into the deaths of all individuals killed by CPD by the Department of Justice.

5. We demand for an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council (As called for by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression) to serve as a democratically elected committee that oversees the actions of the Chicago Police Department to ensure true justice is being carried out, and the community is involved in matters of hiring, firing and the accountability of the actions of those in the force.

Important NATO3 Update Missed on Saturday’s Show–Please Write and Donate

“We all wasted a lot of money on the war on terror, because if these guys are terrorists, we’ve got nothing to worry about.” – Thomas Durkin, Jared Chase’s defense attorney

Our apologies to the NATO 3 and the NATO 3 defense committee for not getting an update out to our listeners concerning Friday’s follow-up hearing in the trial of Jared Chase, Brent Betterly, and Jacob Church. In all the shuffle and discussion over the ISAT situation on last Saturday’s show that, we forgot to give an update on the air.

On February 28th, Judge Thadeus Wilson set the tentative sentencing and post-trial motions date of April 25th. In addition, the defense team filed a motion for acquittal based on the evidence presented earlier in the trial. We’ll keep our fingers crossed but won’t hold our breath, seeing as Judge Wilson rejected an earlier bid to toss-out the terrorism counts brought by States Attorney Anita Alvarez via a little-used terrorism statute. Lest we forget that Alvarez has a long track record of defending police misconduct.

The verdict was reached back on February 8th when, after 8 hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted the 3 men of providing material support for terrorism and conspiracy to commit terrorism. They did, however, convict them of two counts of misdemeanor mob action and two felony counts for possessing an incendiary device. The last conviction is odd because the recordings by undercover police officers indicate quite clearly that the officers prodded the three activists through the entire process of making Molotov cocktails from conception to semi-completion.

As we discussed with local journalist Chris Geovanis on our show earlier in February, it was very telling that the Federal Government had little to do with this otherwise high profile terrorism case. This implies that there was a concern about the strength of the case that warranted avoidance of giving the defense a national stage to point out some very un-constitutional activity and possible entrapment, carried out by the police infiltrators.

We obviously feel that the conviction is excessive, and the cost of the entire NATO legacy, not only to the three activists but also the city and the state, is terrible. Please consider donating to help with their legal costs and commissary needs. You can also write letters and send them books and postcards. Interview: The NATO3 Defense Committee

A special thanks goes out to the NATO3 Defense Committee for having a member join us last Saturday. We appreciate, and stand in solidarity with, your work to support all prisoners of this system. Brent, Jared, and Brian are now heroes of this movement. Who knows if they really intended on it, but they have managed to take on the force of anti-democratic hostility served by the state, and delivered a defeat to the overzealous prosecution. Surely, the cost to them and their family is enormous. That is why we say they are heroes.

It says a lot about the radical community here that groups like the NATO 3 defense committee have formed to support those who came from elsewhere to fight this fight; and got nabbed in the process. Let us hold the NATO3 in our thoughts and prayers, and advocate for leniency in their pending sentences.

Please check out the support site, and donate to their jail fund if you can.
