I’m confused… Israel bombs clearly marked UN civilian shelter despite acknowledging they had the exact GPS coordinates, killing 15. Evidence shows no militants in or near compound. Israel offered no evidence. Israeli soldiers also fired on peaceful civilian protest by desperate frightened civilians. FOX News says they “Clashed” with Israeli “Defense” Forces. Palestinian death toll now at 800, including more than 200 children. 4 hospitals and a children’s hospital hit directly by shells. Israel says that they warn residents to get out. Ironic, as Palestinians are not allowed to leave Gaza. Where are they to go? We’re told that Israel’s Mossad can do everything from finding Nazi camp guards and terrorists anywhere in the world and assassinate Iranian nuclear scientists in downtown Tehran, but somehow can’t find Hamas leaders corralled in Gaza 300 feet from the massive wall they erected around tiny Gaza? Gaza is the same territorial size as Evanston, Illinois with a population of 1.7 million. Israel says that Hamas uses civilians as shields, compelling civilian collateral damage. They have satellites, video cameras and aerial surveillance of every square inch of Gaza , and yet produce nothing except a few poorly armed individuals shooting from the rubble of their home directly at attacking tanks and soldiers. Some tunnels admittedly are for terrorism, many help smuggle embargoed water, food and medicine. Where is the proof they are using human shields as cover for terror? Just because Netanyahu says it only makes the corporate media believe it. In 1994 a dozen small mortar shells exploded within yards of me in Bosnia. I felt the shockwave effects for 3 days. Israel is dropping 500 lb and 1000 lb bombs in crowded city neighborhoods. What do you think the effects will be? Call President Obama at 202-456-1111. Tell him his legacy and the historic moral and strategic legacy of America is at stake. The Israeli government’s annual Defense Budget is some $16 billion, or 6% of the nation’s GDP. The actual Military Expenditure as of 2011 is $58.8 billion-18% of GDP making war currently Israel’s top industry. The United States supports the Israeli military with nearly 20% of its budget annually. You can impact that number by boycotting Israeli-made products until the conflict ends by avoiding items with 729 in the barcode. The incursion into Gaza has cost the Israeli people more than $3 billion…Cost of a Hamas Qassam is a few hundred dollars, cost of Iron Dome Defense System costs each Israeli about $45,000…The human cost to innocent Israelis and Palestinians: Incalculable.

Truth is not the first casualty of War. Truth is the mother of Propaganda. Civilians are the first victim of War. If you wish to understand the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, 2.5% of Israeli’s belong to Security services and the IDF, 2% of Palestinians belong to Hamas. Ratio of Palestinian civilians to Israeli civilians killed: 471 to 2, estimating that 100 Hamas have been killed. 50% of Palestinians killed and wounded are Women and Children. ½ of civilians in Gaza are under 14 and over 65. Nearly 1300 children, 700 women and 200 elderly have been wounded. Number of Israeli civilians wounded: 5. Number of Palestinians free to leave Gaza: Zero. Some 98% of Palestinians and Israeli’s are caught amid the hate. The true victims of this conflict are not Palestinians and Israelis, but human beings. The real enemy is the divisions we create and support with our collective silence. The real crime is silence.

Israeli nationalists decry that Palestinians don’t acknowledge Israel’s right to exist, yet refuse to acknowledge the Palestinian’s right to exist except indefinitely as low wage workers treated as criminals and trapped in the Gaza Ghetto without freedom to move, travel or defend themselves without harsh and unbalanced punitive reprisal. Break the cycle. Demand peace and justice for Jews and Palestinians.

The Christian Research Institute and Equip.org say less than 3% of Americans are Gay. They use that statistic to argue against human rights for homosexuals. I have a few statistics of my own: Roughly 1% of my extended family is gay, though I suspect it might be higher based on some family reunions. About 30% of my friends are gay. 85% of everyone I know could give a damn if someone is gay. Most of those don’t care whether someone else is straight! Approximately 99% of Christians at CRI are dicks, which seems rather gay to me. 1% are just there for the insurance. And for those who use statistics to support their bigotry against the private lives and rights of others, 100% bug the sh#% out of me. So much for statistics…

Bugs attacked our precious Tomatoes, we discovered this morning. Gardeners and experts will tell you how to prevent bugs from attacking your pretty and innocent Tomatoes; the blame the bugs for being bugs crowd again! Instead, I blame the Tomato for looking all plump, juicy and attractive. All dolled up like that, who could blame a bug, huh? So, to protect my Tomatoes and not tempt the bugs we have chopped back all the leaves, hidden the plant in the kitchen and covered the plant with a dark cloth, just in case a wily bug might get a look. Somehow the plants never grow to their proper splendor and fulfillment, and we don’t have those nurturing and beautiful Tomatoes any longer, but thank God we’ve protected the bugs!

Gale Elementary: The anatomy of a CPS school closure, & a strategy to stop it

On today’s show (que4.org), we’ll be discussing the conditions of Gale Elementary school with Rogers Park community members and members of Chicago Light Brigade. Earlier this month, due to the hard work & love put in by the community, they were informed of CPS plans to meet their demands. Now the school will NOT be closed, and after years of neglect by the CPS which has lead to plummeting enrollment numbers, the learning environment if these children will begin to improve. Tune into Revolution and Beer tomorrow for a live discussion with about what this school and their supporters have been up against and how to secure the gains they’ve made into the future.

Here’s a quick overview of the situation surrounding Gale Elementary School in Rogers Park, as seen on Chicago Tonight:

Rascal’s the Long Road: A Revolution and Beer Music review.

120_9405
It’s dangerous but natural in rock and roll to evoke comparisons with other musicians. Rock is replete with pretenders, borrowers and copycats, but once in a great while comes an artist who channels a spirit with a fresh yet familiar and resonant style. Channeling a mix of rockabilly, folk and country, with a subtext of Latin melodies deftly integrated, comes the first EP from Nebraska guitarist and vocalist Rascal Martinez, or simply, Rascal.

Rascal’s vocals come up out of the Nebraska plain like cool summer swell, evoking the sounds of a reincarnated Buddy Holly. But here is where comparisons from seven deceptively simple songs on “The Long Road” ends. The lyrics are straightforward, carried by addictive melodies. The lyrics are where these songs derive a timeless power. “I needed you, but you left me. I didn’t know what to do. You said you would never leave,” begins the first toe tapping song on the EP. Backed by Marcello Sanchez on drums, that competent and assured beat rounds out a lean but full and almost painfully introspective sound.

I wish that I could take credit for finding this CD, but that credit goes to morning talk host Nate bell on The Morning Dammit show in Chicago, AM1710, and streaming at www.que4.org weekdays 7-9am. Bell, with cohosts Celia Forrest and Shaun Rosten. They featured Rascal Tuesday morning. From the opening of their show I was hooked.

Track 2, “The Times are Over,” and Track 6, “Figure Yourself Out” are the defining pieces. “Please Come to Me” is heartfelt and moody. It borders on the absurd that bragging rights for Rascal and the Pack include winning the 32nd Annual Texaco Country Showdown in North Platte, Nebraska as part of the annual Honky-Tonk Barbeque competition, beating out eight other contestants. There is a clearly a talent here that resonates far beyond Honky-Tonk and the sun-burnt fields of Nebraska. Certainly there will be a story one day told by Rascal that goes something like this “…and then we won the Texaco Country Showdown!” Doubtless that will come at the beginning of a long train of accolades.

It’s likely you’ve never heard of Rascal, but like a storm brewing over the plains, it is only a matter of time before you do. In the meantime, this rare collection of unpretentious songs can be found through the artist. http://www.rascalsentertainment.com/. “The Long Road” is only a taste, but given the beauty of this CD, I can hardly wait for the main course.

Montrose Melee, police partly to blame. Respect for police is a commodity. With brutality on rise, slow response and indifference to citizens, siding with corporations to brutally curtail peaceful protest and free speech, siding with self-serving politicians against the will of people, acting as naked revenue agents, protection of corrupt and criminal cops and the militarization of police feeds a culture of contempt and mistrust. Time to stop the “us against the people” mentality, return to protecting civil rights and try to be nice for a change. Do that and the community will respond to support you. Otherwise it all falls apart, as we saw last night.
