Revolution and Beer…of the week: Spiteful Brewing’s Double ESB and the meaning of reward

20130803_181536

The sound of a heavy sigh, and me draped over the back of a chair. Before me the nearly smoking hot keys of the keyboard, and those magic words that every writer alternately prays for and dreads-“The End.”

It is the end of this road. The cats and laundry have been neglected. Dishes have piled up in the sink, and the wife kind of, sort of recalls the last time we actually had a substantive conversation. For the last several weeks the predominance of our communication consisted almost entirely of a befuddling series of gestures and waves. But it is done, and after all of that, the late nights and up-before-dawn writing binges, I can rejoice-albeit alone.

No, no, it isn’t like that. The wife didn’t leave me for someone who communicates verbally. She was at work when I finished the Play, “The People’s Republic of Edward Snowden,” a humorous swipe at the security state. So I fed the cats, which, as excited as they were for food, gave the place a party atmosphere. As for me, I was saving something special for this moment.

I’d been coveting a bottle of Spiteful’s P.A.C. Forever, Double ESB. I grabbed a couple of stout tulip glasses to focus the aroma a bit and headed over to Brian’s for a taste. We’d both had a tough year, and beer really has made the difference in keeping us both from falling to deeply into those challenges. Beer, good beer, and the community we brought to it, carried perspective. I caught him at home alone, waiting for the family to return. The house was quite, golden late afternoon sunlight bleeding through the blinds in the front room of his red-brick Chicago bungalow.20130803_181337

The beer poured to a cloudy copper color with a bit of an ochre hue. The light cream head was full and airy, settling gently, and lingering upon the glass in an intricate lacing. The aroma was light and nutty with a slight fruity character with notes of grapefruit and cherry. Brian and I raised our glasses together. Radio, TV, nearly a hundred protests this year, a new book and a play, on top of all that has happened this year-so far- and the first taste of Spiteful’s P.A.C. Forever charged through us like a shot of joyously cold electricity. The 7.6% ABV didn’t hurt either!

The nutty character of lightly toasted malts hinted at in the aroma carried over richly in that first taste. It was laced with fruitiness underlying that bordered on the tart side without being disagreeable. Extra Special Bitters, or ESBs are a bit of a misnomer. They are, in fact, characterized by balance. The double ESB, I surmise, referred to an enjoyable hoppy bitterness at the end.

It had come up cool that evening, the sun nearly set behind the two flats across the street. Brian and I finished the last of our beer. The family was just getting home, so I made my departure. The fever and rush of the last several months seemed paused for a moment, the memory of Spiteful’s P.A.C. Forever Double ESB and the peace of the evening returning perspectives to their rightful place. I took a cleansing breath and started down the shadowed block. Sometimes even revolutions need a moment…

Rail Service Workers Go on Strike Demanding an End to Illegal Firings

From July 26th to 29th, Management at Mobile Rail Solutions fired three workers actively engaged in unionizing efforts. The termination of these organizers is a direct attack on their Union drive and apparent retaliation for their recent OSHA filings. Management then threatened to continue firing workers showing no respect for their employees or labor law.

In response, the workers have self-organized a strike and will be picketing at Union Pacific’s Global 1 location in Chicago, Illinois. They demand a meeting with Mobile Rail’s general manager to discuss the recent wave of Unfair Labor Practices and for the reinstatement of their three fired workers. With most workers coming to the picket line, they expect locomotive servicing will come to a halt.

The workers at Mobile Rail solutions have organized with the Industrial Workers of the World. Several weeks ago they filed for an NLRB election and hoped to have their voices heard in a secret ballot election on August 14th. With the string of three firings over the course of three business days and threats of more firings to come, they feel that only an Unfair Labor Practice Strike can protect their livelihoods and ensure that all workers get the right to vote for Union representation.

We encourage all union members and supporters to show solidarity and come join the picket at 1425 S. Western from 6 am to 8pm.Contact: Sam Green, 773-728-0996, ghq@iww.org

This past Thursday, WC was able stand on the picket line with Mobile Worker’s Rail Union, on strike over dangerous work conditions, and labor abuses by management. We’ll reach out to Mobile management for there side of the story, and video will be up shortly, but an alarming pattern emerged regarding our interviews with workers. Stay tuned for more on this at Revolution and Beer.

Smear: The Right attacks Reza Aslan

This is my standard; convicted war criminal and one of the architects against the genocide of Muslims in Bosnia, Radovan Karadzic, never publically gave an explicit order to eradicate Muslims civilians, to rape, loot or drive people from their homes. He gave his tacit approval by his silence, by the inflammatory and hate-filled rhetoric, and then defended it through carefully constructed language. Karadzic was guilty of his crimes.

Standing on frontlines, held at frontline checkpoints by armed paramilitaries, in towns and villages where hundreds had been executed, and talking with snipers who regularly took victims on Sarajevo streets, those Serbs were active on silent but explicit orders. The assault on human rights and dignity has not ended, nor do I reasonably expect it to disappear in my lifetime, but I stand against selective dignity and selective rights, and efforts to trick and cajole communities, or a part of a community into the compliant corner of ignorance and hate. It is why I am adamantly in opposition to so-called men-culture thieves-like Glenn Beck. I have seen his kind before.

Yet I am constantly astounded by the blind supplication by an audience to Beck. I would expect some audience, mirroring the demographic of sociopaths inherent in the general population. But men like Beck are allowed legitimacy, this for a shameless self-promoter who perennially predicts upheavals, catastrophes and calamities that never come. It’s like those pious semi-cult leaders who proclaim the rapture and decry a date, only to have it pass as just another day. Take his latest Mosquito coast garbage today, which would be laughable if Beck didn’t enjoy a poisoned audience of animated fools, bigots and shut-ins.

Earlier this week Beck reacted to the new book by Reza Aslan, the author of “Zealot,” an attempt to look more humanly at the life of Jesus in the context of his time. The video of Aslan embarrassing a FOX News host regarding the book went viral on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt1cOnNrY5s Beck seemed to have backed off the attitude that Aslan needs to shut up, but my take on his words this week describe another direction of attack simply to discredit a man who got over on a Rightwing tool on FOX. His costume outrage on today’s show had the feeling of a smear as he attempted very pointedly to discredit Aslan.

Never once did Beck talk about the substance of the book. Instead he went off into a paranoiac lather about a vast conspiracy involving thousands including Aslan, Media Matters, George Soros, the Tides Foundation and Iranians.

“Somebody else is pouring money into him(Aslan),” Beck said on his radio show today. “The Levantine Culture Center partners with Code Pink…They’re extreme Leftists.”

“Fine,” said a magnanimous Beck, “he can write about Jesus. I would just like Christians to write about Islam without being killed.”

First, when did even Christians come to OWN Jesus? Islam views him as a prophet, and last I checked, Jesus lived and died a Jew. So I think that means he is significant to all three. Second, his co-host, one of several yes men to stroke Beck when he requires it, said that Christians don’t write books about Islam, that about a quarter hour into hour two of the show. Which is really odd, since I found a great many openly and unabashedly anti-Islam books just in the first half dozen pages on Amazon, such as Islamophobe Robert Spencer’s “The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).”

Beck finished coughing out his media hairball by bantering about tweets by Aslan, which sounded to me to show frustration at being harassed. It is well-known how the Right annoys and harasses targets and dissenters to their hate cabal. Now, I am not saying that Beck set up Alsan as part of the effort to discredit him, or to attempt to add substance to his diarrheal attempt at structure, but it certainly has been a tactic on the right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIeByOeERpY, not convinced? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI0jY_SHGXA, or Tea Party shills yelling “Glenn Beck.” How about this goon for Gun Prnographers and the Right, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gculWPlYwW4? Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzDLGk0tvas, or, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOpIdgl5bHI.

We’ll have more on Beck and others speaking irresponsibly or maliciously as a means to coarsen the culture or to eliminate opportunity for those not defined or oppressed by the status quo. We will continue to fight against anti-Islam hate speech, unjust statements and attitudes towards immigrants and the attempt to legitimize racism. It’s a big fight, and as always we welcome a debate with Beck on any topic of his choosing, and we’ll do our best to get this piece into his stained fingers. Doubtless he’ll prove his penchant for cheap shots and cowardice, but we’ll see.
